You'd stop THEM. However, it has been shown enough that death penalty does not work as a deterrent against hard violence. So if you'd actually like to deal with the problem, you'd have to come up with something different than 'Kill em all!'

You mean bankrupting a family because their rebelling son went off the reservation?
I'm guessing that won't work because a) the family cannot stop this from happening and b) the kid won't care or even think of the conseuquences.

Look, I know this is not going to be a popular opinion in the US, but you're not going to solve this with more or more severa punishment. Prevention is key. Unfortunately, US society is not in favor of anything that is not punitive in nature.

Btw, the topic of gun control is still banned, so let's not go there.

    is a very sad situation
I call them murder simulators. You get high points for "kills" and you never get hurt or die mostly, and you can start or stop whenever you want. It is perverting their sense of reality. Youngs kids, in their formative years, are kind of fragile and need to be steered and nurtured (not trying to sound like a hippy here) and shown what is good/bad right/wrong. The video games act as a babysitter and they spend countless hours on these games. Klebold and Harris (Columbine) both spent coutless hours playing Doom together. They were so good at it that they designed there own level with more brutality and bloodshed to satisfy them. Lanza (Newtown) was also an avid "gamer" who was predisposed to "FPS" (first person shooter) games. He reportedly played an FPS game for about a solid day right before the Newtown tragedy. In fact a responding police officer found multiple 30 round magazines that each still had ammo in them- a few rounds apiece. No one could figure out why that was until another officer piped up reloads in FPS games and the habit of reloading before you get to "slide/bolt lock". Lanza was perfectly replicating what he had done thousands of times "virtually" in that school on that tragic day. When Michael Carneal opened fire on a prayer group in Peducah KY he had never fired a gun. Never. Yet his shots were almost all headshots, with a pistol (3 dead 5 wounded). Also and avid FPS "gamer". To go back to Columbine; much has been said about Harris and Klebold being bullied, outcasts or "goths". Actually they were rich kids with very afluent parents (they drove to school that day in a BMW)Their "parents" so consumed with careers that they neglected their children. To a tragic consequence.

    Why ???

Why did you instantly go to Bankruptcy ??? just wondering ??? as I never mentioned anything like that at all
My early thought process is that perhaps if it would cost the parents, then perhaps they would invest more "Time" in raising them rather then "Money" in the incarceration.. Or even better perhaps they wouldn't have them in the first place and solve many more of this country's and the world's problems...

ie: the ole ounce of prevention vs a pound of cure

Anyway what I was going to mention, slightly off topic as I havent seen the report, but in response to Carl's last comment, I saw on the news a story from Syria, where the government aledgedly used some sort of nerve gas on the population, I don't want to comment either way on the Ins and outs of what happened and who did it because no one really knows yet. But there was also footage of streams of people leaving the country with nothing but what they could carry.
Nothing new I know. But it did bring a tear to my eye, and leave me both angry and upset that stuff like this still goes on, and really make me wonder about why I worry about the relatively inconsequential tribulations of my life.
I too am a product of a broken home. Until I had someone invest in my life and "steer" me in the right direction I was adrift and headed for major trouble. There are exceptions, but more and more here lately the "parents" of these kids treat them like burdens and they strike out against society and everyone else suffers the consequences.

Everytime I see the Syrian pictures it breaks my heart. All those kids that are my kids age.....

Someone better keep an eye on that cop. He obviously plays murder simulators and has easy access to weapons.

As far as I've seen, there is no evidence of any video games contributing to this shooting. On the other hand, there is more evidence that perhaps this had a racial element to it much more so than one of a video game.

He is a grown adult that has had to undergo Psych eval and multiple other character tests and screenings, not so when you throw junior in the room with all the latest and greatest shootem up FPS games unsupervised while the parents carry on with "their" routine.
