Entering into a controversial topic has, to my knowledge, never gotten anyone banned. However, the way some people have gone about it has sometimes lead to a timeout or banning. Basically if you keep it at the level of debate or discussion, put forward your view with reasons or better yet evidence it's all good and in fact can be highly illuminating, stimulating, instructive and beneficial to all members. The problems arise with personal attacks on other members, flagrant trolling, that kind of thing. And that's got nothing to do with whatever the controversial topic is, but how we behave toward each other. It's basically about respect and the "golden rule" - do unto others etc.

However, some controversial topics have historically never gone well from day one - like gun control for example. They always, without fail, get personal. So the leadership team makes decisions on those for the overall good of the forum, and some - like gun control - are made "off limits". IMO it's a shame when that happens, but evidence is evidence and the one thing I am certain of, having peaked behind the curtain a few times, is that the leaders of this forum always have its best interests first and foremost in their mind.

As for things like the Classifieds, you scam you ban. Again, the best interests of forum members and the forum in general is the guiding principle.

    Word James, thanks !

Regarding those debate threads on controversial topics, be it politics, sports, honing ........ whatever ....... I've observed that some guys just have to have the last word. They are like pit bulls who've gotten hold of a wild boar's ear, they will not let go. Say your piece, respect the opposing opinion, even if you disagree with it, and move on to the next topic. IMHO.

And regardless of the topic, never ever suggest that a member go back into the kitchen and listen to their Barry Manilow records.

I agree with you completely Laurens, also, we all know that coticules are the best and the only way to properly hone a razor, right? Let alone those people that leave all that dirt that they call "patina" all over their blades...some people!

edited to add: note to self, read the rest of the thread before you post a joke that's already been made several times, otherwise, you might get banned.

I got banned at B&B. still am i guess.

    The short version:

I was wanting to talk about making soap and had started/restarted a few threads in that regard. And 12 out of 11 replies were about melting and mixing PREmade soaps. It's not the same thing. Or they'd start parroting everything they'd ever read WRT soap making-but had never done.

And i got a bit irrigated, and i run on the "intense" side as well you know, when i'm focused that is.

So an overzealous mod (bless his heart) axed me when I figuratively in prose "threw my hands up in the air in disgust". There were no personal attacks, foul words, lewd photos, or spamifications involved.

I migrated over here. (so if you're ever over there look me up for fun)

FUNNIEST THING, I did meet a guy (there) who does understand saponification* BUT THAT he is banned _here_.

So we chatted in email. It was worth "making acquaintance" with that one guy.

*and all those juicy details of selecting the proper salts and fats with respect to what each one brings to the finished product, balancing and tuning for performance as the maker so desires.
