Is there anyone else who likes the idea of.something more than the actual thing?
For example I like the idea of the ocean more than the ocean. To expand, I was looking at sailors pictures in pipe of the day and the ocean going life appears to have a lot of wonder to it, but I am really quite scared of the sea, I will go on ferries and such and will paddle in shallow water that doesnt have seaweed in it, but the idea of open water swimming or cruises isn't for me.

A cruise would be nice. I spent four and a half months on HMAS Westralia when I was I the army. WE went all the way from Perth in WA (where Ed lives) to Nagasaki and back and I 'drove' the thing through typhoons in the South China sea. It was extremely exhilarating standing on the bridge holding a little steering wheel watching the bow smash through huge waves. The ship was a converted oil tanker, 175 meters long and 12 stories high. I remember balmy nights sitting on the 'bridge wing' gliding through waters as calm as a bath watching the luminescence in the water.

While this was no 'cruise' I did fall in love with the sea and the fact that for weeks it was just me, the ship, the sea and the sky. At night, looking up, the stars seemed to be swaying from left to right, as I'd become so 'tuned in' to the movement of the ship that it seemed the SKY was moving, not me.

We stopped at many ports; Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kota Kinabalu, The Philippines, Thailand, etc etc and did what sailors do in each, i.e. drink from dawn till 3 in the morning.

It was an incredible time; resupplying destroyers with fuel and water while the ship's band played good old Australian rock music blaring out from huge speakers set up on the bridge wings, it was like being on a floating oil platform.

Those memories will never leave me.

Yes, well. Deciding which was starboard and which was port took some time; especially after a few days drinking Thai whisky. They also use green and red as designators. Left is a shorter word than right. Now, starboard is a LONGER word as compared to stern, and green is a longer word than red.

Starboard is right (green) and port is left (red).

    See? Got it all sorted...

Smogasboard left, pork right, traffic lights might mean stop or go but red and green on a boat doesn't mean stop and go.
