Striped Marlin are not good to eat IMO,I caught some 30lb Salmon last week (river fishing) were dark spawners, not worth keeping.

those are of a very nice size. anything over 30 is a good trophy sized fish. I agree that the dark river fish are not much for eating, still better than eating farm salmon though. This is my first year without a boat for twenty years. It has been a tough season, good thing it was filled with extra time at work. I did managed to get out with a friend and got enough halibut for the winter.

    pixelfixed.....

The picture of the two fish on the dock are swordfish. They came to the dinner tables of all the guys on the trip, mine and many of my neighbors. They are very good to eat and the larger was a "pumpkin" which is especially tasty. Their meat is sort of pumpkin colored from a diet of pink colored shrimp that live in the depths of the Gulfstream.

The fish in the water is a sailfish, and although edible we always release them providing they are in reasonable shape to survive. If they come up in bad shape (very rare) and they are legal size, they are headed for the smoker. When bottom fishing mutton snapper, yellowtail, grouper, etc are all coming to the table. I was always taught, and firmly believe, that if something is not going to be eaten then it is released in good condition.

And FWIW if I should hook into a marlin it will be released because like sailfish they are worth far more to the economy of South Fla in the water than they are on a plate.

Until very recently I was a sports fishing guide. I worked at a private lodge for a large corporation. The pay sucked but the side benefits were great. My philosophy on no catch and release was accepted by all the guests. I have strong feelings on conservation, most of which are backed by science. Hopefully very little of it is backed by misinformation.

I think that visiting relatives are very much like fish. After about three days, they begin to stink terribly....

Gooser, the trout down here are lots of fun to catch, but not so good eatin, we call em mud fish. The only way to eat em is smoked, then they are just ok. Sea run trout are much better. The coast we fish off is pretty rough, gotta time it right, but good fishin, will definitely take pics next trip. Summer is coming.

I had a HUGE one on the line, dang head and neck was as big as my wrist and the shell was as big as my steering wheel. Sucker was PISSED I brought him up or that a hook was in his mouth...either way I calmed him down with 147 gr JHP out of my Glock 26. I guess he got the last laugh as his head blew up like a grenade and got me & the boat well...and I didn't get to bring him in for proof is what stinks. I ended up with four cats on the line and the turtles or gar had their day with them. Only one was alive and got put in the livewell. I ran the jug lines on the other side of the lake and literally nothing...so that's it for me and chicken livers, I'll go back to goldfish, minnows, and chicken gizzards. Any other suggestions?
