Thanked: 995As I write this, I'm inside the burn area north of the Lime Belt/Blue Lake fire. It went through this area, and doesn't show up on the maps yet. The sun is red from the smoke until about 1100 and gets high enough. Most of the threatened structures are now safe. Once the call went out for volunteers with red/blue cards, all the old time firefighters showed up with their personal cats (caterpillar) and put fire lines around all the neighbors places. The wind shifts are miserable because stable fires get a shot of life again.
I've lived through floods and tornados in the Midwest but have not seen what fire can do to the collective consciousness (read anxiety) of a whole county before. There is more courage in this place than you can shake a stick at.
Next time you see a smoke eater, find some way to thank them.

Thanked: 13246Glad to hear you are still with us Mike, was pretty bad on your side of the mountain we have been pretty lucky over here on our side so far !!!!
Spent yesterday trying to remember my math lessons for long ago to figure the max capacity of our well cistern for the Fire Suppression pump, finally said screw it and went to google and plugged in the numbers
Waiting on the actual 1 1/2 inch fire lines and nozzle to get here to finish that project... finished the trail up and got those marked so that I can get all around the perimeter of the property...
We lucked out yesterday with a wind shift and got a full day of beautiful clear air, but at around 6am this morning we were shutting down the windows as the smoke and ash were back...
We had a couple of the AT-802 Fire Boss aircraft land here yesterday Mike, I guess they are heading over to Priest Lake to attack your side of the fire...
Pretty bad for ID and WA for the past monthLast edited by gssixgun; 08-24-2015 at 06:09 AM.

My Friend,
As always you are practicing the 6 P's. Just remember there is a time to fight and a time to run away to fight another day.
My thoughts are with you and your beautiful bride! Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdins cave of 'stuff'.

Hope things are improving over there guys.
We haven't had any serious fires here in Kuringai for a while, which is probably just as well with all the housing that's creeping into the national park. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

This is something like a recruiting film, but it does give an insight
into the character of a firefighter. These folks may save your
bacon one day, and they deserve a lot of credit."If you come up to it, and you just can't do it, then that's jolly well where you are."
