Most cats I've been around are only nice to certain people. Take mine for example it is nice to me and my gal but runs away form the kids. Which are all 13 and up. She will come to
them only for food after that she's done with them. And by all means do not rub the tummy more than three times or all hell breaks loose.

Cats are pretty independent creatures who take a shine to humans only when there is something in it for them. of course there are exceptions but in general that's how they are.

If you want a real pet companion get a dog.

My in-laws have a cat that they see once in a while. I can be there for 8 hours and if I see the cat once, it'll stop in its tracks like a deer in headlights. Then it will promptly leave the room not to be seen again. Meanwhile we have two cats. One is orange the other black. The orange one needs to held 24 hours a day. He loves attention no matter what it is, tap him on his nose, push him over, hold him upside down. He loves all of it. The black one is more independent but is never out of the room from you very long. They are all very different.

I would certainly appreciate cats more if I wasn't severely allergic to them. My skin will welt up at the slightest touch from a cat, so I steer clear of any feline friendlies.

I had an hilarious green conure (talked quite a bit) a few years back until my girlfriend moved in and couldn't stand his constant harassment. I had no idea "Buddy" thought he was my mate. In hind sight, I should have kept the bird and not the g/f.

I have heard it said that to have a balanced life you need a dog to adore you and a cat to ignore you. There is a lot of truth in that statement.
