The biggest thing is not to try to set it and forget it. You have to be watchful.
Randy mentioned a door getting kicked in. Here's one more piece of advice for whoever wants to hear it. You can spend $300 on a deadbolt and someone kicks the door in and breaks the frame. Your best money spent on a door is in the frame many deadbolts come with 3/4" screws for the strike plate. I can't tell you how many door kick ins I've seen where the door and deadbolt is fine but the frame is all over the room. These days most good brands come with at least 2" screws for it which is Okay but they are size 8. The screws should go into the jack stud at bare minimum. Ideally there should be at least 4 screws into the jack stud and minimum of size 10. You can beef up the door also and should if it is a pre-hung door. There are all kinds of systems for that many of which are stupid and unnecessary and more that anything ugly as a fat lady's ass. It's a balance. You don't want to get broken into hut you also don't want to spend a grand on a fancy door then make it look like crap. The wrap around plates work really well but I don't think they look very good. If you are going to get one of those though, get a Don Jo (or MAG if you can find NOS {MAG is now out of business}) which has a recess for the bolt or latch crimped into the plate, not one that goes over the bolt. In general though if you have a good solid wood door the door won't split as easily as the frame. If you get a strike plate with at least four screw holes And make sure they go into the stud then you're in pretty good condition. Especially if you're in an older home where they actually true framed the door frame and you have a four or six screw strike plate then the guy that tried the kick in the door will be easy to find. Just look for the guy with the limp. There is much more to it. The biggest thing is that you want to have a multi-layered security system. anybody can figure out how to kick a door in or beat a camera or get around an alarm. Not as many can beat all of them. The more layers you have the better off you are. Just one other thing to keep in mind. You want it to be something that is easy to use because if it's a pain in the ass you'll quit using it. You may use it at first but eventually you'll get complacent and quit using it because it's a pain in the ass

Sorry Roy but I had to post another one here. Ya' know, I'm not an expert on honing or stropping or anything else involving razors but this is what I do for a living. I'm willing to answer questions for anyone if they want to PM me. You can send me pictures or whatever and I'm happy to discuss it with you and.help you find the answers you need. At the very least I'll try to see if I can help you find someone reputable in your area. I know people all over the country from forums and other networks. Here's one general rule of thumb though. If someone tells you absolutely that they can definitively fix your problem then they're full of crap. anyone who is worth their salt in the locksmith business will tell you that if someone wants to get in bad enough they will. All you're doing is trying to make a strong deterrent and anyone worth their salt will tell you that.

Paul, thank you for your expert advice and sharing your experience.

We are getting new doors installed front and back - full units including framing, transoms, doors and locks. The information you provided is very helpful.

I know this isnt about camera's but the way we deal with safety and keeping the bad guys away at night is to light up the house. We have lights on, on every side of the house. And not just one. At night you can look down my street and see 15 houses on each side, being in the city, and my house it lit-up bright! Every other house on the block is dark or maybe just one porch light.
    It's just Sharpening, right?

We are the same, every corner on the house shop and barn have Motion detectors and flood lights, not really for security but to see animals out there..
Nothing worse then going out at 3:30pm in the pitch black of winter to grab a load of firewood and spooking a Bear or Moose LOL

That will wake you right up and get the blood pumping

Damn boy! That was a big ol' boy. Yeah I'd say walking up on him without seeing him would make you extrude you cloaca.

You never know when the big widlife will sneak up on you when you live in their country.

I have a friend who lives in the mountains of British Columbia. He gets tags to hunt moose every year, but hasn’t seen one during hunting season for the last several years. Last year he was in his hot tub when a big bull moose casually strolled onto his property - after hunting season had closed, of course.

The moose casually munched on some of his garden will he hid (in the all together) by the hot tub until the beast decided he’d had enough and left.

Here we don't really have big mammals. Lots of them just not very big. Black bears and panthers are as big as they get. Now big reptiles we got.
