Has anyone else been watching Handball?
I'd never seen it before. Great sport! I'm loving the pace and physical play. I think it could be a really great sport here in the US, I'd love to play but I wonder how one would even get started.

Thanked: 174I've been watching a bit of the Olympics and The UK has been doing well. The one thing I don't like is the pressure the BBC is putting on the British competitors. Get a gold and overnight you are a superstar. Get a bronze and your lucky to be acknowledged. Totally fail and your history. OK it's good to promote success but it's also quite normal to acknowledge the success of just reaching a standard to compete at the Olympics.
I've seen a few British successful competitors close to telling the interviewers to take a running jump and if they keep loading pressure and expectation on their young shoulders, they will kill the real potential.
You see it's all about the sport, the competition, the taking part. Except when your about to host the next event and then it's all about the winning and the success.
Well I can tell you now, that whatever we do in the 2012 Olympics, our fireworks are unlikely to be as good as the Chinese can produce.
Despite this, I have found the whole Olympic event to be uplifting and a heartwarming and it sure beats the heck out of the normal television outpouring of repeat programs or news about recession, inflation, war, famine, death and destruction together with the football results and a pretty lady telling me it's going to rain tomorrow.
I feel better for that.Last edited by English; 08-19-2008 at 11:51 AM.

You know what they say....second place is first loser!
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
I think as long an athlete performs up their potential, they are successful. If Phelps hadn't won any golds, that would have been a failure. If an athlete does well by finishing fifth - then they've done good.

I've rather enjoyed watching the Olympics again after missing the last two due to a non cooperative ex! I really enjoyed watching the swimming, cycling and the athletics and am totally stunned by some of the tallent out there.
Bolt, Phelps and Hoy have all performed phenominally, kudos to them and all of the athletes who managed to qualify in the first place.
At the moment Kelly Holmes is promoting an "eat your breakfast" campain on the TV over here, which I find totally Ironic as Bolt said he doesn't eat breakfast in the first place!!! When they asked him how he had prepared for his record breaking run he said " I slept, ate some chicken nuggets while watching TV for a few hours. Had some more nuggets then went back to bed" The guy is sooo laid back it's untrue.
Wooohooo!!! We have just won another gold in the womens 400m. Which brings us up to 16 Gold.

"They" are typically talking to sedentary Americans that sit on the couch or at their desk with minimal activity. Phelps' activity level demands all those "bad" things.
