Bruno, at least you guys have gasoline priced higher than diesel as it should be, here its been assbackward. I bought a diesel vehicle severl years ago because of efficiency and diesel cost vs petrol. When prices went up somehow diesel soared above petrol and Ive been screwed for doing the smart/right thing ever since! with your costs of 5-8 $ per, its a good thing you dont have far to drive in Belgium. Good God!

You know what? This is the greatest thread in human history. Words cannot express my emotional distress right now thinking that this thread could possibly be closed.

I could not agree more!! This is the best thread I have ever read, because it says those magic words "Matt is right" not just once, but twice!!! This thread should live on forever.

When I bought my 1st. Mustang in 65 I remember paying 27.9 cents a gallon with S&H green stamps on top of that. This also included the gas kid to pump it for me.
By the time I got out of the Navy, gas shot up to almost .70 + and I had to pump it myself.

Who here can remember the lowest price that they paid? When I was 10 my dad got it for 18 cents

I feel your pain. I drive an F250 diesel with a 38 gallon tank, and it was costing nearly $200 to fill up there for awhile.

A couple of things caused diesel prices to rise above gasoline. One is that diesel is now much more expensive to refine since they have to strip out all the sulphur and then rejigger the blend so the old trucks can still run on it. Second is that Europe has gone much more heavily to diesel, so the US refineries trade their excess diesel to European refineries in exchange for Europe's excess gasoline. This has solved the primary market imbalance that kept diesel's price lower than gasoline - it's no longer a "waste product". The way things are now I think we in the US are stuck with diesel costing about 30% more than gasoline - partly because diesel requires about 30% more crude per gallon (diesel is about 30% heavier per gallon than gasoline). Also in the US the feds tax road diesel more heavily than gasoline, because road diesel is primarily burned by truckers who can pass it on to their customers, while gasoline is burned more by voters who can't and will get p*ssed about the tax hike. Diesel is also burned as heating oil, but that's taxed at a different rate, and diesel used for agricultural purposes is also taxed at a different rate.

In the States, the price of gasoline always goes down at election time, just like magic.

Perhaps the oil companies don't want gas prices to be a big issue?

I pm'd whig and he was joking, in reference to the paranoia remarks in 2 other posts. @ Dice stone, I remember my father in the early to mid 60s passing up gas @ 18.9 and getting it cheaper @ 17.9. I remember what they called gas wars, the dealers in town would try to undercut each other on the price of fuel , but thats been a long time ago.
