Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife
By Gene Warner
News Staff Reporter
Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband — an influential member of the local Muslim community — reported her death to police Thursday.
Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.
"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning. Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.
Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.
The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon. "Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.
Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband. "She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said.
Muzzammil Hassan was arraigned before Village Justice Deborah Chimes and sent to the Erie County Holding Center.
the other Buffalo news that day pushed this into obscurity.

Nope. Appalling is doing what some places and blogs have done and calling this a "HONOR Killing" i do not care how stressed out you are because you business is failing and your wife wants to leave you... taking the time to hack her head off ... is not honorable... no matter how good it may make you feel.
Be just and fear not.

Terrible and sad.
I'm not one to watch the court and crime shows (don't watch much TV at all), but I may have some insight into the 2nd degree charges vs. 1st degree. Others more knowledgeable will hopefully clarify:
If I understand correctly, murder in the 1st degree can only be charged be a Grand Jury? So, this murderer will most likely or even undoubtedly be charged with 1st degree but only by a Grand Jury.
The only reason I know this is because just over a week ago a man killed an elderly couple by entering their home and stabbing them both to death (stabbing the man 30-40 times) north of where I live. He's currently charged with 2 counts of 2nd degree murder, but word has it that it will be 1st degree charges soon.

Thanked: 267You know you have to be tolerant here. I don't think it is politically correct to call this an honor killing. We, after all, have to understand that different cultures have different ways of dealing with the complexities of our daily lives. Nothing is to be gained by speaking out against woman castrations, honor killings of women, and whatever else is deemed correct in the very complex world of the average male that finds it very difficult to adjust to this decadent western world. Oh by the way if he used a dull knife it is a sigh of disrespect and sharp knives are used to kill people you respect, dull ones are used to slaughter animals. Great culture, huh?

Good thing they have tough gun laws in NY.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
