Montana is amazing. My parents live there. I'd like to live there myself. Even the 'cities' aren't really city-ish by my definition though, so that's something to consider.

I've lived in Manhattan. It is an incredible place, but I'd only suggest moving there at this stage if you have the money to live a decent lifestyle without running yourself thin. Want to live in a decent area? Rent is HIGH. I could never afford 'decent'.

One place that definitely meets all of your criteria is Philadelphia. I grew up there and still love it. You could find a great place outside of the city in quiet, wooded areas but be close enough that you'd get to the city in 30-45 minutes. The city itself is so spread out outside of center city (downtown) that you could even look within the city for something nice. The change of seasons anywhere in the NE is great!

Well, Austin and Santa Fe were among my first thoughts as I was reading your posts, but ...

San Antonio might be a possibility, though. That's just based on what I've heard, I haven't been there.

Since you want mild winters, most of the places I have personal experience of are out. But you might, as a general suggestion, consider college and university towns. They pack in more diversity, youth, night life, liberal arts, kultchah, and maybe even ethnic food for their size than other American towns. If you have a particular geographic area of the country whose climate and type of outdoors you like, you might look for university towns in that area.

To your list of requirements you really should add: near mountains - near ocean. Welcome to Northern California.

Sort of cost of living problem if you meet all the requirements.

You're looking for SEATTLE! or maybe south of there on the sound (you didn't include perpetual sunshine in the list).

Another vote for Missouri, Cost of living is good, Weather changes everyday but its not bad, crime is not to bad here, mind you I moved here from Brooklyn NY. I live about 20 mins outside of Kansas city Its very clean here and people are very friendly.Kansas city has recently had some improvments , there is more night life, buildings and roads have been refurbished. The people who live here dont realize how nice it is, but moving here from where I came from this place is beautiful. The town I live in has one of the best school districts in KC.

Springfield MO is very nice country living, easy going, slow pace lifestyle.

Mild winters, fantastic pristine nature, young people and a cosmopolitan atmosphere ... my suggestion is that you take a look at the areas around Seattle, WA.

Given our run-ins, I'm surprised you didn't say anything about a Jewish community, but you'll find that there too.
