i have a staffordshire bull terrier. i got one because they are superb all round dogs - good in the car, with people, with other dogs and totally reliable around children. unfortunately few people understand this breed and as such they don't have the reputation they really deserve!
i also have great affection for english bull terriers for much the same reasons!

Thanked: 0Two big honkin' purebred Akitas. The male is 155 lbs (on the vet's scale, not an exaggeration) and rests his head on the kitchen table while standing flat footed. I had to fence the yard to keep the deer out. The sheriff told me that if they killed one I'd be fined for hunting without a license.

Yellow Labs! Incredible all around hunters - watefowl and upland game. They work hard all day and still want to play at night when I'm tuckered. They don't complain when we're all covered with sleet & snow - even when nothings flying. If I miss, I get dirty looks; but they quickly forget. Plus we're blessed with having one of the best lab kennels in the country just down the road - Candlewood Kennels. If you're looking for incredible huntering or field trial labs PM me for their info.

I have elected not to own a dog. With my work schedule, I am very seldom home. I live in an apartment can't have a "doggie door", so I decided it would be unfair to the dog...being held captive.

You might want to try a cat

More times than not she's down with me in the woodshop keeping me company while the two goofballs are running around looking for tennis balls.

I had a couple of beta fish, good companions, never made a mess, didn't say much, but the kids got bored with them and I did not replace them when they died.

Thanked: 0Our chow mix of 14 years died yesterday morning. Red hair, black tongue, and being a mix she didn't have the aggressiveness of full blood chows. She was intelligent and even crafty. Once, when we had chickens, we caught her sneaking out of the hen house with with an egg gently in her mouth.
She was an avid hunter, starting out with New Mexico prairie dogs. When we moved back east I remember her surprise that the prairie dogs ran up the trees. Never one to play fetch, she caught one squirel in a dog park with 20 other dogs looking on.
She took out both her rear ACL's chasing after squirrels. The last time she ran was after a rabbit. She later moved onto things that didn't run. A smile on her face while squinting out of one eye after killing a skunk. It was only last week on a good day she was walking double time after a bunny.
Mostly she was a gentle peaceful dog, that was very patient with my daughter and other children constantly pulling her hair. She would growl but rarely snap, and the snaps were only for show. She would entertain us, growling constantly as the cat slowly curled up next to her until the cat was in position, she would then stop and go to sleep.
She would find ways to get out and would come back with taco bell leftovers, a chassis from someones chicken dinner or thanksgiving turkey. She also had a penchant for black labs.
My wife got her at the Santa Fe pound a few months before she got me.
Her name was Hildegard, but we called her Hildy. I miss her but my life has been enriched from having known her. Take care Hildy, rest in peace.
