As someone to the left of liberal, I agree. Rights are rights. I will also point out that I know plenty of people who are quite leftish who think guns belong in the hands of the citizens - and probably for the same reason (on the surface, anyway) as I have heard from a lot of Right-ish people - that the gov. should not be the only armed entity. Bad things happen when that is the case.
