The Clinton AWB was disastrous for the Democrats....they lost seats in the house and senate purely because of the ban. Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have come out AGAINST reinstating the AWB, or creating a new one. (btw, Harry Reid voted against the original AWB in 1994)
Obama supported a new AWB as a senator from Illinois, but now, as president of the united states, appears to have changed his position, opposing a new AWB and instead favoring better law enforcement strategies to curb inner city violence. Obama Won’t Reinstate Assault Weapons Ban | Politicususa.com
It should also be noted that Obama supported allowing concealed pistols in Washington DC, and DEFENDED Bush's policy, allowing guns in National Parks.... Obama Defends Bush Rule on Permitting Guns in National Parks - First 100 Days of Presidency - Politics FOXNews.com
The hysteria concerning gun rights coming from the ultra-right is just that, hysteria. Since Obama has become president, his record on gun rights has been very libertarian (as it should be).
I listen to Michael Savage, G. Gordon Liddy, Gun Talk and *cringe* even Rush at times.....all these guys do is claim that there is some "hidden agenda"....they ignore his voting record (since becoming president) or what he's said he would do and claim that "any moment now they're coming for your guns/ammo"....it's simply not true. Even if they did want to ban certain guns/ammo, Obama and the Dems know it's a losing battle.
Often people will point to statements or votes he made years ago when he was a junior Senator from Illinois....mainly these votes revolved around giving states and local municipalities the freedom to determine their own gun regulations. You could make the argument that this is constitutionally sound (seperation of state and federal powers)....I don't really agree with this because the 2nd Amendment clearly enumerates the right to bear arms in the FEDERAL Constitution....
But remember that he was REPRESENTING ILLINOIS, at a time when there was a HUGE violence problem in Chicago.....this is a whole different ballgame than representing the entire United States. I think Obama understands this, and that's why his position on this issue has become much more libertarian.
Anyway, point and case...until he actually proposes legislation or starts making scary statements, lay off the guy. Just my $0.02 =)
