i think i get it now...
the negative rep point is like a time out...
if you do or say something someone else dont like they can post negative feedback...

like posting on a thread and getting a negative feedback because the creator of the thread decided to put it on the newbie area and not the conversation...

    good job!

Just used this button for the first time.
Did not even know it made a difference to the thanks button.
Now that explains a grey thanks without a comment.
    Hhhmmmmm.....

    Do we really need that?
Actually "when you don't have anything nice to say
just don't say it" should do, or not?

I respectfully beg to differ. High numbers of reputation points usually indicate a competent, helpful, and gentlemanly member of SRP. Personally, I find that helpful.

Robin I meant whether we need the negative rep thing at all.
The thank you's are of course a great motivation to be nice and helpful.

As are the negative rep points. They should motivate the poster to do better next time. That only makes sense in the shaving related forums, though, I think, not in e.g. the Conversation.

IMO post should not count on the general area section...
I was a mod for a while on a car related forum and we had an issue with people who came to the forum just to chat and to meet people and from time to time ask about issues with the car...
and 99% of their post were on the general area...

the owner decided to only count posted outside that area...
so new people could actually see who are the ones that post on the right areas...

Apart from adding smilies, I am also looking at the rep system to see what is technically feasible. The mod team is looking at making it more useful. We are considering a number of possibilities. I know the rep system has its opponents, but it really can be usedful is used properly. As I said. work in progress.

Personally I prefer to focus on giving positive rep. the only time I have ever given neg rep was on another forum to a troll. Typically, you leave your nick with a pos rep so that the one receiving it know who it's from. Leaving your name with a neg rep is not typically done. Fair enough, but if you decide to leave a neg rep, at least leave a reason. Otherwise it's just trolling.

The rep system is anonymous to prevent people from retaliating. Given human naure, that is probably a good idea.
