If you look at the bottom of the user information to the left of each post, under the avatars, you'll see little green squares. They represent your "rep" or reputation.

Each time you click "thanks" on a post, you add to that user's rep. You can also add to it, or take away from it, by clicking the small heart icon below their rep.

In theory, although I've never seen it on this forum, you could get so much negative rep that instead of little green squares, you started getting red squares. I have actually seen that over at ubuntuforums.org when some troll has created an account purely for flaming.

As for "who cares" not many people on these boards. It varies from board to board. On some sites, rep power is very important to people, on others, nobody cares at all. From what I've seen, most people here don't care, some care a lot.

I wonder if this should be moved to the site comments and suggestions forum

PS Bruno I like the new emoticons but it's getting harder and harder to use them as preferred as long as the "edit favorite smilies" remains broken. I'm on the verge of giving you some neg rep for that

My previous post was actually just an excuse to get another thank you rep point from Slartibartfast

Ya know, just the other day I was feeling that old Catholic guiilt left over from my early Christian times. I was also slipping into a low period. I was compelled to give myself negative rep but the system wouldn't allow it. Then, just a few days later, I was feeling much better about myself and I thought, "Don't be so concerned with what others think of your Brad, go ahead and give yourself some positive rep, maybe even a few hundred thanks while you're at it." But guess what, the system woulldn't allow that either. I don't know what anyone else thinks But I personally am grateful we have here on SRP a system that protects us from the silly whims of our own bi-polar tendencies.

You bet. We should all neg-rep Hoglahoo. I don't recall seeing him on the forum before, but he sure is flooding this board with inane messages. And goodies for the giveaways...hmm...okay, positive rep...

It sounds to me like, in good old Catholic guilt tradition, you are trapped in limbo. Guess you must have been an enlightened pagan, eh?

The way I heard it is that the Hebrews invented guilt and the Catholics perfected it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
