I was wondering about those people who lived and worked face to face with Dennis Rader. I'm sure if they could see that in his various internet communities he had very few green dots they may have suspected that he was the BTK guy.

Just because you've been on a forum for a long time, it doesn't mean you're right or your opinion is valued by anyone on the site - at all - period.

You might have turned up a month ago, with years of experience and passed on more insight and knowledge than the guy who's been here for years.

you opinion might be worth more.

it's muddy water and the rep system helps clear it up.

True enough, but when we typically have several truly senior members echoing the same opinion, that should do more than rep points.

I'm not necessarily against the system, I just don't think it's as helpful as thorough research. If the newbie is basing choices about putting a deadly blade next to his throat off a single post from a supposedly highly reputed person, this honestly isn't the place for that newbie.

As the forum keeps growing it will be more and more necessary to have a good method of distinguishing the good information from the bad, as the sheer volume of newcomers discovering things willing to share what they're learning as pure gold (everyone does it, right? ) could get confused with the time-tested info from the often less enthusiastic or less prolific old-timers who condense years of experience into a few lines in one post in a thread

there's gotta be a better way to do it than the rep system though, surely!

You can PayPal me $3, and I'll give you a positive rep.

Or you can PayPal me $5 to keep me from giving all of you negtive rep.

The choice is yours to make, I wash my hands of any further accountability....

This man makes an excellent argument.

I'm glad this thread has been a referendum on how much everyone is really bothered, and the poll definitely puts a number on the "care factor"

It turns out that hardly anyone cares.

ARE YOU GETTING THIS MR NEG REP?
that goes for the bunch of you (however many there are)

NO ONE CARES (probably always been that way huh?)

    have a nice day.............GW..............
