If you hover your mouse pointer over something you don't trust, your browser will show in the status bar what that thing is linking to. For IE this is in the bottom status bar. I don't know about FF, Safari or Mozilla, but something similar will probably happen.
This is one of the things that are essential I learned when reading slashdot.Fellow /.ers probably know what I am talking about. No links please.

I voted I don't care because I don't pay attention to the rep system at all. I've been/read around the forum enough to figure out who's posts I trust, who's posts I'm likely to find amusing, and (something about) what sort of attitude/subtext to expect in many of the members' posts. Granted I have been on the forums for a while, but I think if anyone "does their research," so to speak, they can get a general sense of things without relying on the reputation system.
Heck, I'm not even sure that I've ever gotten any rep aside from posts where I've been thanked, and I really couldn't care less about what my own rep is. I try to help out where I can, I get involved in a little friendly banter, and I let people know when I think their posts are helpful and their razors look sweet (btw, posting pictures of sweet razors is the same as being helpful in my book, because part of the reason I have straights is because they look sweet and I like to look at them).

I kinda like the "thanks" button... but I think that this rep thing is as lousy as it can get... I mean: I have a lousy reputation - and this is correct, I am a looney and I don't know about straight razor shaving, cleaning, building, restoring (I am still a newbee, trying to find my way) - but I am allowed to give far more experienced people good rep or bad rep... does this sound a little awkward to you? surely this would work better if only a selected team of experienced people could give rep, like the mods...
Only my 2c.

@ Ockham
There is a difference between rep and rep power.
Rep is what you receive. Rep power is how much someone can alter someone else's rep. Newbies start with 1. for every year of membership, you get 1 extra rep point, as well as 1 point per 1000 posts.
So you repping me would affect me less than if -I- were to rep you, which is the scenario you are describing I think.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Thanked: 234I think it's kinda important it's anonymous. If not, then you can just bet your bottom dollar flame wars would ensue as all we ever got we're people asking other people 'why did you give me negative rep'
At the moment, you just have to take it like a man and move on.
I'm not sure when I would leave negative rep, I mean, I don't think I would leave negative rep for a post that was unhelpful (generally) but I would thank a useful post.
It would probably have to be something that was actually offensive, but it would, more likely than not, be pulled anyway if it was offensive enough for me to consider giving it negative rep.
Interesting element though. I have no idea if I've recieved negative rep - can you view more than the top 5 at all?
