All this talk of negative rep & suddenly there are thanked posts all over the place!
What are the blue pips in my User CP? Is that negative?
I predict that this current fashion for negative rep will be shorter lived than the popularity of Spyderco extra fine! (No offence is meant by this statement to any fans of the Spyderco extra fine.)

Thanked: 171I mean more to say that I wouldn't/don't take a couple negative reps personally. Big deal, some jerk took the time to put me down. On the internet. Anonymously. It just doesn't bother me.
I do think the rep feature is a good way to feel appreciated and to show your appreciation for others taking the time to help you or someone else out, I just don't think a couple bad apples throwing negative rep out there are going to tarnish the real reputations of our valuable well respected members.

Thanked: 155I don't care because I say what I mean and mean what I say and make every effort to be correct. Anyone who disagrees is free to say so, and I will not take offense as long as they are civil about it. Anyone who chooses to voice their disagreement by clicking anonymously on a button is simply not worth my concern, and anyone who places any value in these types of ratings instead of taking the time to weigh the pros and cons of a discussion and forming their own opinion does not matter either.
Just my two cents.

Thanked: 234So, you don't care because you place no value in the system.
Your last sentance is an interesting one, what would you suggest the new guys do, who have no real idea what to weigh? I mean, you've got to start some where, and 9/10 that involves taking advice of someone, face to face you get a much more complete idea of a person, on a forum you have to take what you can get.

I think that comes down to the newbie. If someone has just joined a month ago and is pontificating on the proper way to do something, yet someone who has been here for a few years is saying something else, it's pretty clear which person is more reliable.

Thanked: 155On your first point - no, I place no value on a system that allows people to assign ratings anonymously and without justification. That is not just here, it is everywhere I see these types of polls. If they are not prepared to put their name to the opinion and support it with facts, or at least reasoned arguments, then why should I put any value on it.
I would suggest that new guys read discussions, consider both sides of an issue and make their own decisions as to what is good or bad and act accordingly. If they then want to award a particular poster, they can do so with a post of their own, explaining why they valued this persons advice and opinion. They should also feel free to post disagreements as well, again under their screen name with an explaination.
