Our very existence depends on using non renewable resources.
Either we consume, or we go extinct, or we go back to being hunter gatherers. The last 2 are not good choices imo.

So ignoring the energy aspect atm, we depend on finding new resources in order to make the things we so cherish, like meds, computers, electronics, and many other things. Having access to water is almost a prerequisite to be able to use the moon as a stepping stone for space travel or to set up a scientific base there. So if there is water enough lying around on the moon, I see no reason not to use it.

And while it is true that there are enough problems here on earth to solve, that will always be the case. We can't put everything on hold until we've fixed everything, because then we'll be waiting forever.
