    Stubear,

    This might help you out.
Arizona Enacts Stringent Law on Immigration - NYTimes.com

Stubear, in a nutshell it's an immigration law that passed in Arizona that allows officers to detain, check immigration status and deport if they feel the need. Sadly, the local government is targeting a specific community. It has gained notoriety by the President of the United States as well as the media.

This quote is from the article linked above in the New York Times.

It requires police officers, “when practicable,” to detain people they reasonably suspect are in the country without authorization and to verify their status with federal officials, unless doing so would hinder an investigation or emergency medical treatment.
I normally don't engage in controversial debates but you had a legitimate question I may have been able to assist you with.

    I hope it helps, Stubear.

Yeah, like when they targeted the fast driver community with stiffer fines for speeding.

Whether we agree or not, it is called "illegal" immigration. It is called this because there are laws against it. Laws are enforced and have punishments attached.

yea, the law is the law... remember when black people had to stand at the end of the counter to order a Coke? and then they had to leave while white people could sit at the counter and drink?

there already are gestapo check points.

Don't fall for it guys, this is a political play here on both sides...

One point that is getting lost in the shuffle is that LEO's can stop and ask anyone for ID in just about Anytown USA,,, you are supposed to be carrying an ID all the times if you cannot prove who you are they can detain you until you can ... These laws are just about everywhere, just because they are not enforced doesn't mean they are not on the books...

What Arizona is doing is pushing the Federal hand a bit, they are looking for more money to enforce the border....

Remove yourself from the emotional part of this and you will see both sides game as plain as day....

    Personally, I think it's a silly law.

There are much more productive ways to curb illegal immigration. For example, streamline the process to become a legal citizen. If my lineage had to jump through the hoops that today's immigrants go through, I might not be a U.S. citizen myself. We should consider that maybe this problem exists because we have a flawed system.

Impose stronger penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants. If they couldn't find work here then they wouldn't risk their lives crossing the border. People argue that there are American jobs taken by illegal citizens, and I agree that this is a travesty, but let's not overlook the fact that many companies abandoned good ol' American help to set up facilities in other countries to take advantage of cheap labor.

Also remember that our founding fathers were illegal immigrants, too!

there is no law requiring anyone to carry identification at any time. you must carry a drivers license to operate a motor vehicle. sometimes this license to drive is used as a photo-identification because it's handy. but make no mistake, it's not identification.

we live in a free state. keep it free by knowing your rights. I drive with a copy of the bill of rights in my car.
How is the weather on Planet Proraso? The entire issue here is the new law redefines "reasonable suspiscion". If say the police are called to a loud party, they will be able to detain anyone at that party who can't immediately prove citizenship. No more "walking away".
