Default Big hub-bub in Arizona right now...

What say you on this issue?

Personally, I don't see anything wrong with it...I don't see this ushering in any 'gestapo-type ID checks' that some media sources seem to think will happen. You would think that this would be a non-partisan issue, but since it would take an estimated $4B to set up a fence along the entire southern US border and yet neither Bush nor Obama seem particularly interested

    Stubear,

    This might help you out.
Arizona Enacts Stringent Law on Immigration - NYTimes.com

Stubear, in a nutshell it's an immigration law that passed in Arizona that allows officers to detain, check immigration status and deport if they feel the need. Sadly, the local government is targeting a specific community. It has gained notoriety by the President of the United States as well as the media.

This quote is from the article linked above in the New York Times.

It requires police officers, “when practicable,” to detain people they reasonably suspect are in the country without authorization and to verify their status with federal officials, unless doing so would hinder an investigation or emergency medical treatment.
I normally don't engage in controversial debates but you had a legitimate question I may have been able to assist you with.

    I hope it helps, Stubear.

Yeah, like when they targeted the fast driver community with stiffer fines for speeding.

Whether we agree or not, it is called "illegal" immigration. It is called this because there are laws against it. Laws are enforced and have punishments attached.

yea, the law is the law... remember when black people had to stand at the end of the counter to order a Coke? and then they had to leave while white people could sit at the counter and drink?

there already are gestapo check points.

Don't fall for it guys, this is a political play here on both sides...

One point that is getting lost in the shuffle is that LEO's can stop and ask anyone for ID in just about Anytown USA,,, you are supposed to be carrying an ID all the times if you cannot prove who you are they can detain you until you can ... These laws are just about everywhere, just because they are not enforced doesn't mean they are not on the books...

What Arizona is doing is pushing the Federal hand a bit, they are looking for more money to enforce the border....

Remove yourself from the emotional part of this and you will see both sides game as plain as day....

Actually many cities and states have policy specifically declaring themselves immigrant friendly cities and states and have ordered their law-enforcement people to specifically not assist Immigration authorities and specifically to do nothing if they encounter illegals.

As far as Arizona goes I predict it will be a law that will never be enforced. The first time they pull someone over who is a U.S Citizen who speaks no english and the arrest them they will be sued so bad that will end it. Also they simply have no authority to enforce Immigration laws no different than if they passed a law saying they can make treaties with foreign countries. If they arrest illegals and call ICE to get them ICE will simply say no and then what are they going to do? Are they going to deport them themselves? I see more lawsuits and what happens when they deport a U.S Citizen?

The problem with this law is anyone that looks Hispanic and may be considered illegal is pulled over, stopped in the street while on a walk with their kids, etc., and then asked for all kinds of paper work proving their legal to live in USA. This is racial profiling and is against our constitution. My sister is of Hispanic descent and to think if she was born here she could be pulled over in AZ and asked for all these papers she doesn't even own is pretty much downright scary. What kind of process are you put through if you're living here for two generations and look spanish but don't have paper work because it's misplaced or you moved several times, etc? Are you put in some kind of retention until the law enforcement department in the area looks into your family background and birth certificates? That's just ludicrous....

I'm sorry, but this is America and to profile people like this is racist and down right unAmerican. It's shameful to think this kind of thinking still exists in this country after all we've been through with trying to make all kinds of people accepted here. I am sickened when I walk around in my town and hear people say things about "Stupid Mexicans" when those people may not even be Mexican, they can be American with non-Mexican blood or what ever, just a different form of Spanish ancestry. It's just another form of hate and it's not 1907 anymore.

We need to find a way to stop the issue of people just coming over to have a future in this country without getting an citizenship, that I agree with, but this is just wrong.
