I'm basically going to repeat what everyone has said: As long as you are having around 1-2 drinks a day, it doesn't matter whether its beer, scotch, wine or bailey's... its good for your heart. There are trade-offs though. Beer has calories and will make you fat. Bailey's has MORE calories and will make you MORE fat. Wine has the whole french paradox thing going for it. Whiskey is a hard liquor and is easy to overdo.

I know that for me, I would drink a bottle of 5 year scotch within 2 weeks. A bottle of 12-year will last me closer to 6 months. 17-year would last a year. The better it is, the less frequently I will want to enjoy it simply to prolong the enjoyment. I absolutely love whiskey, particularly scotch. That is one liquor that I don't think that I will keep in the house very often, simply because I know that I would drink it very frequently.

Bottom Line: Whiskey is Dangerous only as far as you don't know your limits. If your limit turns out to be no whiskey, then don't drink whiskey.

Interesting, but I put 0 stock in Government studies. There is usually some underlying motive when the Government engages in a study and draws a conclusion. Funny how the government study coincides exactly with the tax hike on cigs. A sure fire way of justifying reaching into the pockets of smokers.

Plus, the study said nothing on the health risks of "moderate" drinking. Excessive smoking and drinking are bad for you, common sense. Light to moderate drinking has been shown in numerous "independent" studies to have actual benefits.

I guess it depends on who's drinking it. If its the guy behind the wheel of the headlights coming at you on the wrong side of the interstate, it's pretty dangerous!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!!!

Many thanks for your replies. I've thought about it and conclude that for me it would be dangerous to drink it every night. I have an addictive personality and can see myself becoming reliant on it! It took me a long time to give up smoking. I think I'll limit it to twice a week maximum.

I limit my intake to nights when I am not working the next day. Seems to work for me.

American whiskey is fairly dangerous, but Scotch whisky is extraordinarily dangerous--have you seen the price of a good single malt? My wallet cramps up in terror when I peruse the Laphroigs and Lagavulins. The more you try, the more danger your checking account will be in.

I too knew a young guy who drank on the weekend. He would never drink and drive, but he would walk home after drinking a Friday or Saturday night away. He fell asleep in the snow and died one Friday night.

I currently work with an alcoholic who is in recovery. He just had a "cardiac ablation". This is a procedure where a cardiologist earns his whisky money by electrically burning an errant conduction pathway in your heart. My friend developed cardiomyopathy as enthusiast of spirits and subsequently developed atrial fibrillation. He looks about ten years older than his driver's license would suggest.

Time for a finger of Orkney's Highland Park.....
