my great grandfather used to do a shot of jack every morning before he went out to milk cows that was it just one shot and he lived to be 91 so id say it dident harm him. i only seen him drink a beer or two ocassionally, mainly it was after the close of deer season party and the cuttign up party.

I think your approach is quite wize.
Like you I was adicted to nicotine for the majority of my adult life but quit 3.5 years ago and have also aquired a taste for whisky.
I also appreciate how easy it is to become dependent on something so if I've had a drink for the previuos 4 nights I'll conciously not have another for at least 2 nights. My preferred blend also happens to be the cheapest available (lidl's queen margot) which makes it quite tempting to have a couple of bottles in hand.
Over Christmas I didn't adhear to that "rule" but since new years I've had several drink free days and even those I drank on it was just a couple of small bottles of Bier Blonde. When I do drink though it can easily be the equivilent of 6-8 units on a night so for me the most dangerous thing about whisky would be drining it before I shave.Regards
Nic
