That is definitely the case most places around the world.
Even here in Norway, where we pump oil like crazy, the pump price consists of about 60-70% taxes.
    Fun, ain't it

In honesty though, I don't mind the taxes on fuel, roads and infrastructure costs money, and the taxes helps to pay for that.

Now a dollar is worth a dime in equivalent buying power. Colt gov model $1,499.00 at Cabella's.

I don't mind taxes for infrastructure either. What I do mind is that it's never enough. They come at us for more income taxes to add to the oil taxes and at the same time blame the oil companies for the high price of gas. Every time prices go up the government attacks "big oil", forces the managers to sit in front of a committee to prove that they aren't price gouging while filling their coffers with gas tax money.

If you could see the state of the UK's infrastructure you'd likely conclude that wherever they're spending most of it, it's not on infrastructure.

Yes that makes me shed a tear for the poor oil companies. Maybe we need to give them some big fat tax advantages, oh wait we do, well maybe they need more. Maybe we need to take up a collection for them.

In Belgium, 95 octane costs roughly 1.55 euro per litre. 98 octane costs roughly 1.65 euro per litre.
Is 95 octane regular over there? Here in New Jersey regular is typically 87 or 89. That's going for about $3.29 right now.

America's three biggest oil companies, ExxonMobil ( XOM - news - people ), Chevron ( CVX - news - people ) and ConocoPhillips ( COP - news - people ), all endure income tax burdens of more than 40%--higher than the statutory U.S. rate of 35%. Exxon, with a 45% rate, tallied $21.6 billion in worldwide income taxes for 2010. Source Forbes.com

I'm sure 40% tax isn't enough for you. Do you believe profits are sinful, that corporations should not make a profit at all?

The first time I remember gas prices, we were on vacation in MO, and my dad was complaining because he paid 1.21 a gallon, when if he'd just got it one city sooner he could have paid 98 cents per. I honestly don't pay attention whatsoever to gas prices. I have to have gas....Whatever the price is, I'll pay it until they find a way to sell an electric 3/4 ton truck for less than 10 thousand dollars.

As for whether the price fluctuates with elections, I also don't know. I've been around long enough to see a few presidents come and go, but the only thing I remember about the last election was that Obama won. I admire you all for having so much memory available to you. I'm not even sure if I ate yesterday, let alone the price of gas 4 years ago.

I don't know what they pay but in the end they are among the richest corporations in the world and some have more revenue than most countries. So when they have a spill why do they use technology that is 40 years old. I guess they can't afford the research cause it doesn't pay money like new drilling methods.
