It is the old divide and conquer methodology, divide the people over an issue, the politician picks a side,(does not matter which as long as he can maintain a following) the people choose a political side, while the people are scratching each others eyes out and calling each other names, the politicos enjoy the champagne and oysters along the Potomac. The people are inclined to give them power and money to fight on their behalf, the politic squanders it on himself and/or his cronies.
Thank you for the Post article, it was a very good read, this has been going on since the '80's, when the govt asked for and the people allowed the various levels of govt to seize property belonging to "drug pushers" in order to punish them. It has gone way overboard far too many times, there are numerous cases where someone stayed at someone else's home while possessing contraband and the home being stolen from an innocent bystander, borrowed vehicles have been confiscated, etc. It is a money making scheme.Last edited by nun2sharp; 07-28-2012 at 06:47 PM.

You're right. We need to look at all the social issues in the US and say "why" is this happening?
Why is One out of every 100 people in the United States is imprisoned. Even though we are 5 percent of the world's population, we have 25 percent of the prisoners in the world. We are number one in the world in the number of people we imprison - we even beat China. Why is our education system behind every other English speaking country in the world? Why is our medical system First only in Cost??? We need to ask ourselves a lot of really hard questions!

Thanked: 124Its like a magician waving one hand while he does his trick with the other. The US has become increasingly fragmented and both sides less and less tolerant, and all have convinced themselves that every fight like this is a REALLY BIG DEAL THAT WILL EFFECT THE FATE OF THE COUNTRY. To put it bluntly, gay marriage isnt important. It affects something like 3-4% of the population, if that. How do I know that 3-4% of the population isnt important? Why, thats the amount of people supposedly affected by the Obamas tax plan. The people supporting it (the same ones who likely support gay marriage) told me that wasnt a big deal then.
But you know, TSA virtually strip searching people, asset forfeiture, no fix for the actual problems of the economy, you dont need to worry about those things...
But to move on to the chick fila thing, I'm glad that there's been an outpouring of support. I have less even less patience for for the intolerance of the left than I do for that of the right... I think it might be b/c so many of the far lefties I've met have completely lacked any charm or sense of fun. Those on the right seem to care much less if someone disagrees with them about something.

I wasn't going to do anything but just read these posts and enjoy them, but.............I certainly do not agree with your old professor about a couple of things.
The Govt doesn't own our rights the people do and the first 10 ammendments to the constitution (bill of rights) are what the people have and what the govt is prohibited from taking away from us. That doesn't seem to be a concern for our government these days does it? That includes free speech, gun ownership, trial by jury.
There is no constitutional right to vote. There is no right to drive a car on public roads. Various licenses issued by the govt are certainly owned by some form of govt. I agree about the civil liberties for the most part and they are mostly covered in the bill of rights. Again, that doesn't prevent the govt from intruding where they see fit. Over the years there have been suggestions about forming a "Bill of Rights" for the Govt. I seem to recall reading that FDR was in favor of this. No surprise there.
I remember when the ACLU would go to court to fight for gun rights, but I suspect they didn't like it. Can you imagine that today?
Anyway, back to work.

I believe the mayor of Boston has backed off. I wish the Chicago alderman and our mayor would do the same. The immediate effect has been a big backlash and the opportunity to paint supporters of equal marriage rights, and liberals generally,* as more intolerant than right-wingers. The possible effect further down the line, if Chik-fil-A ends up being kept out of the ward in question, could be a lawsuit, which the City would lose. Our tax dollars have already been drained plenty by directed awards and settlements for police misconduct and other wrongful actions. One would think aldermen and other city officials would be aware of that practical implication if nothing else. But while some of our aldermen are bright, dedicated, and on the ball (we hit it lucky in my ward in the last election), others, well ... thinking things through isn't always their strong suit.
*Both of which I am; I'm also a believer in the Constitution and a card-carrying member of the ACLU, which I'm happy to say has opposed this official overreach.
Bruno has brought up a very good point, which might be taken up at more length in another thread. I'm not a huge fan of George Will, and I doubt if he would follow his reasoning through to its logical conclusion (which is that the So-Called War On Drugs, or SCWOD, has been a long disaster for our country and for others such as Mexico that have been caught up in it), but in the cited column he is right. In honor of the late Gore Vidal let me recommend an essay from 14 years ago (during which span everything he talks about has only gotten worse). (If you know Vidal, you won't be surprised that his column is considerably longer than Will's.)

Thanked: 270This thing has gone viral, with an executive getting fired for recording a conversation of him giving the lady working the drive in window at Chick Fil A a lot of lip with his disagreements with their ownership's stance. Abuse of help staff who is probably making close to minimum wage by someone probably pulling in six figures is just ridiculous.

This happened here in Tucson. The guy in question, a CFO of a company, thought he was being Joe Cool posting his video, then thought better and tried to take it down. But he failed to realize once you put something on the internet it's there to stay. Now he is out of a cushy job. Maybe Chik-fil-A is hiring.
