Haha no, no booby traps in my house, id set them off myself! I have a good security system and cameras in my house and the basement just incase I was ever broken into. I would dread to think what my collection could do in the hands of criminals.

This post has been my most successful ever. lol. I knew eventually I'd find something to talk about that you folks were interested in! Woo hooo!!!!

I think humans, as a whole are a lot more hearty than they know. If cataclysm occured, there'd be plenty of people that survived. Comfortably surviving...maybe not. But staying alive doesn't have to be pleasant in order to be successful. And even the most dainty of souls, can harden, given the right incentives. Think of the Jewish folks who survived such terrible conditions. If you asked them prior to, they'd have probably said such a thing would kill them. But, just yesterday, a man spoke at my college, who lived in a concentration camp. And he seemed very much alive.

My German teacher at SOSU was a Jewish concentration camp/march survivor & you could tell that the experience taught her to love what life you have to the fullest...she was a sweet ole' gal.

I met a very wonderful German lady a few years back. She lived through the destruction of her city by the Allied bombings and later the Russians. She was 4 years old when the first bombs hit Berlin. She immigrated to America as soon as she got out of school. She loves the USA. That lady had some fascinating stories to tell. After the war was over, she and her father picked up cigarette butts and re-rolled what was left until they had a complete cigarette. When they had enough collected enough they traded them for food. She said the American soldiers always had some candy for the kids. Guess it was a good thing she was in an American controlled zone at the time.

It was a pleasant way to pass time while waiting on the tire guys to re-shoe our respective vehicles.

I had a college teacher that had been a Hitler Jugen. He was the captain of an 88MM anti-aircraft gun crew at the tender age of 13. I asked him after class one day how many rings he had painted on gun barrel. He replied, "Four." and changed the subject.

She was lucky to be only 4 at the time. Most German women were mass/gang raped by the Russians and Americans. But that's not in our history books.

    Really?
The word "Most", to me, indicates a majority; so you are telling readers of this thread that 51% of the women in Germany were gang raped during the war. Atrocities were committed by all sides. That is the nature of war. Just 1 atrocity, is 1 too many.

If one of your relatives was a victim of a gang rape by the Russians or the Americans, then I understand the source of your anger and I feel for your family.

If not, then your statement as to "Most German Women" appears to be undocumented B.S.

Heck, your ahead of me. I wish I had a basement, they are kinda rare here where I live, water table too high, dig a five foot deep hole; it'll be full of water overnight. I've always wanted a basement, if for nothing else, storage or more important things like wine.

Yah basements are very rare where I am aswel, I was just lucky that my house happened to have one when I bought it. There very handy though, exelent storage and it's using wasted space under your house.

My "dream" house would have one floor above ground, two below. Like you said, wasted space, along with the waste of natural controlled temp. I see you hail from Australia, I guess you don't live in Coober Pedy then. From what I've seen in Natural Geographic, everyone has a basement there!!

All of which are completely useless if a large group of people decide you are in their way.
You and your small group of people need to eat, drink, and sleep.
You can have all the bullets you want, but you will not survive an organized siege for long.
You cannot defend a large are with a small number of people. The fence might as well not be there.
So you'll retreat into your castle, where you will not have access to fresh water and fresh food.
And if the attackers are halfway smart, they'll just keep making an unholy noise for a couple of days until sleep deprivation makes you a zombie.

Your only realistic options are to either be part of a big, well prepared group that can defend a sustainable area under siege, or you choose the lonesome option far, far away from other large groups of people.
