You cannot defend a large are with a small number of people. The fence might as well not be there.
So you'll retreat into your castle, where you will not have access to fresh water and fresh food.
And if the attackers are halfway smart, they'll just keep making an unholy noise for a couple of days until sleep deprivation makes you a zombie.

Your only realistic options are to either be part of a big, well prepared group that can defend a sustainable area under siege, or you choose the lonesome option far, far away from other large groups of people.

A person's strongest urge is to survive, but to what end? One needs to realize that, perhaps, they will survive. To inherit what?
If the catastrophe is short term, or long term. How can one decide?
My power went out the other night, I called my Son via cell phone. Did he have power? How long will it be out? Is this just a glitch, or the beginning of the end? Should I go to the local 7-11 and mow down everyone inside and loot all the bottled water? He said the power was still on in Biggs, Ca. Glad he told me, saved a lota lives.

Big catastrophe means modern high tech society ceases to exist. Even a tsunami on the other side of the globe can cause massive problems in the supply of semiconductor material. A real disaster with long term effects will drop us back to pre industrial times if we cannot get the tech pipeline going again before things start breaking down and knowledge or tech is lost for good.

There is no way that a pre-industry society can support the 7 billion people we have now. Let's say that we can sustain 1 billion people. As soon as we hit that point, things can stabilize again and we can try to get back on our feet. And if knowledge survives, the tech should follow quickly enough.

The major problem will be while those extra 6 billion are still in the process of dying off. Because they will try to do anything to stay alive for another day. And they will be in the majority. As Stalin said: quantity is a quality all of its own. You can't win. You'll have to go to a low population area where you can avoid the crowds. Remote villages where you are not an outsider would be ideal because by then you'll have a community that is stronger than the separate individuals.

Of course those 6 billion won't die off all at once, and not immediately. Some will be able to hang on for a while. So I'd say it will take 1 generation before you get to the 1 billion point. That is the period that you'll have to be able to sit out.

You all know of course the folks in the Federal Govt have this sort of thing all worked out. They know who to rescue and who to leave to the wolves and where to take them where it's safe.

This got me thinking. Cheap wine is as cheap as bottled water. How long does cheap wine store? Rather than 200 gallons of water how about 200 gallons of wine. Maybe it would be good to barter. If not you could enjoy the end of the world as we know it.

Yes I'm cooper pedy all the houses are totally underground, not just a basement as it gets so hot during the day and freezing at night, mbuilding underground removes the need for heaters and air conditioners. I hail from Newcastle, a city two hours north of Sydney.

strong liquor goes forever. Wine... esp cheap wine... a couple of years.
You'll have 200 gallons of vinegar.

Port Wine was the answer to that, but it's not cheap. But, with two hundred gallons of vinegar, you can get pickled! Sorry, it's early, and that was bad.

The answer my friends is Uisge Beatha, the water of life.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Irish whiskey is far better than Scotch whiskey that's for sure Cangooner. A pity that the Welsh answer in 'Penderyn' is too damned expensive, because I like it more than I like Bourbon. But Bourbon is my go to for price (and taste), Irish is my next choice for the same reason(s). At least Jack Daniels was a Welshman...
