Discarded
Generally speaking my wife and I know all the kids and parents at the day-care our kids go to and vice versa. As a rule, when we leave, we all kind of lollygag outside talking about the kids and the like. Sometimes the kids run about relatively unattended as it's a quiet street.
Anyway, yesterday we didn't hang about thank goodness because when the one family crossed the street their little boy ended up picking up a loaded semi-auto pistol that had apparently just been used in a shooting of some kind! What the... ? Really?
The crazy thing is across the street is another day care!
I am just glad we didn't hang about because my kids are a bit older as are many of the others. I don't know what would have happened if a kid who knew how to play with "it" would have happened across it first.
Anyway - that's my exciting Midwest story of the day...David

Great, just watched the news to see what went on yesterday, only to find that there were two other shootings today! This is a city of only 120K for heaven's sake... sigh.

Thanked: 498I'm glad your family is safe & sound. I always expect that kind of thing in my city of Philadelphia where the news is constantly showing gun play. But not in the countries heartland.
I guess its rough everywhere.
Keep your heads down one and all!!!

Man, oh man, that's crazy. I remember when I was a kid we mostly had to watch out for things like not licking metal poles in the winter, looking both ways when you cross the street, not eating yellow snow, etc.
Very happy to hear the cast-off detritus of one tragedy didn't lead to another.
It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

Topeka KS has 11 murders per 100K - Kansas City 21 - St. Louis is batting 40.5..... Phili - 19.6! The "Heartland" is a mess!
United States cities by crime rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
*EDIT* oh and Toronto is at about 3 per 100K Cangooner.Last edited by earcutter; 10-17-2012 at 01:07 AM.

As far as 2 day cares in the area criminals are not worried about things like that. Trying to think about things like this from a sane point of view will yield no understanding.
Contrary to popular belief I feel safer in a large city than in the rural area that I grew up in. I had an interesting conversation with a truck driver at work from a small town. I asked him how many people that he knew in jail, mugged, murdered, robbed, etc. From a small town these numbers where relatively low but divided by the relatively small number of people the percentages where much larger than mine in the large city. In the large city there are many more people so these things happen more often and you see them in the news more often. If I don't do drugs, prostitutes, gamble, and stay off a few streets my odds are statistically much lower of getting in trouble.

If he is..Best go inside.
Oops! Back on topic to say I'm glad the OP didn't stay to visit with folks today. And I'm glad the story ended with no tragedies.
