The first thing I thought: I am glad it wasn't Scola. Not because I have anything against the man, but because he was the ultimate insider and right hand man of Benedict.
The second thing: he really does not look like he was too happy. In fact, during the previous conclave he was runner up several times, and asked several times that he would not be elected. When he appeared on the balcony, the appropriate description imo was 'stunned'.
The third thing: as soon as he started talking, I felt that he was a man on the people. Someone who can relate to the people in the streets.
I wish him all the best.
It's also the first non European in 1200 years.
He is the first of that name. I hope he will bring a fresh wind to the churchTil shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
