+1 mycarver - you do awesome work!
Your story above reminds me of that old saying, "no good deed goes unpunished."
Speaking of brushes???

Have you tried the High Mountain White Badgers? Ahhh kinda reminds me of some Plissons I had rebuilt recently. Sweet knots for sure. Popped some into cool handles I spun up. Pretty too!

Are you just yanking my chain? Ha,,,
Well in this case the ace up my sleeve is having a friend who has the proper Osha, EPA and licenses to run plating. It's a nasty business. He does brass and silver but with a little arm twisting and using his shop, and his permits to buy the chemicals that aren't available to the general public and the gold I picked up, and the venting system he has along with the proper electrical hookups, we got my blades plated.
There was a time I was able to buy any variety of acids I like to use to do etchings. No more. I've called every chemical supply I could find and not one would sell me what I wanted.
It's not like I was trying to buy bulk kerosene and fertilizer to make some holiday fireworks or anything.
But if you're really interested I have several blades of my own lined up to plate.
And with the base metals used ( nickel and or copper ) prior to the Gold this process is far superior to the original factory stuff or the do it yourself at home kits. It doesn't wear off and leaves a luster beyond my NOS Goldedges etc. Pretty reasonable for what goes into it. Remember, the Gold doesn't hide a flaw, it accentuates them. So the blade prior to plating has to be absolutely perfect or any flaw will stick out like a sore thumb.
Just like the prep if you've ever done Chrome plating. The piece being plated has to look like it's already plated prior to the chrome plating.
Say that 5 times fast.
Now I'm working on doing gold washes on the blade in designs like you see on Pumas, Dovo's etc..I'll get it or die trying,
There,, see, I'm not so tight lipped!Last edited by mycarver; 11-30-2013 at 10:35 PM.

haha wow, I thought you were doing some home plating process. You know, since the rest of your DIY work is on point. I guess my gold king, magnetic steel etch (like yours but on a Geneva Cutlery), and DE's will have to go without plating.

Really? Why? Just because I don't do it in my home? Did you see my pieces? I don't care where I work as long as my razors look good.

No I meant, I thought you had a process for doing gold plating at home that I could replicate
I don't have the same skilled friends that you do!

Ah, I see. Well it's not as painful as you might think compared to what assembling even the do it at home type kits and you'll have a beautiful ( and higher value razor) which has a more durable finish to boot !
