    Here's an update.
    I completed the sanding on the scales and decided to oil the scales with a neutral coloured oil. The problem was that the oil dissolved the glue. And due to earlier mistakes there really wasn't enough material left to put a pin in but I tried anyway and cracked the scales but this time beyond repair.
    So I had to start over but doing it right this time. I first made the scale blanks out of maple this time and I made two with even thickness. I then made the wedge with the desired thickness this time. I then glued the wedge to the two scale blanks and let it cure for 24 hours. I now had a blank with the correct "flare" to work with.

    I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The maple is stained with a Hazel coloured outdoor wood stain.
