My only firearm is a 50 cal percussion cap Great Plains Rifle. So far it seems to me that Ballistol is the best option for it.

I had to clean this one tonight, so I snapped a few pictures of my usual setup. My son has been training with it the past 3 weeks, it belongs to him. We got back late tonight & he has school tomorrow, so I'll knock it out for him,,, usually he cleans his own weapons & they must be cleaned the same day as shooting. I bought a square bake pan & place a thick old rag at the bottom; this is my drip/flush pan. The rag absorbs all the junk & is good for a month or two,, then discard. I use WD-40 to flush the parts first, toothbrush & 1st wipe with cloth. The WD-40 pushes carbon, grit & solvent off the metal before the detail cleaning with Q-tips. (Special care not to flush WD-40 into the firing pin area.)

The past month I have been using the M-Pro 7, don't see a problem with it yet. The WD-40 I purchase at Home Depot by the gallon & place in a squirt bottle. It lasts a lot longer than the spray cans & is a lot cheaper in the long run.

When I was working I just disassembled and put it in the ultrasonic cleaner. It came out as clean as a whistle and you don't even get your hands dirty.

Too bad those days are over. It's back to the hoppes for me.

    Hello to All,

For bore cleaning I have found Iosso bore paste to be superb

It is what I have been using in my 0.30 Krieger barrelled BAT actioned long range target rifle for years, and it has done a spiffing job.

    Have fun

    Best regards

    John,

Love the MPro as well. Great stuff.

Gun cleaning is another theraputic activity. I dread getting to it, but once I'm in it, I find it quite relaxing. The happy place.

I don't own any handguns. I do however have a shotgun and a couple of rifles.
The only cleaning I ever do is to pull a boresnake through the bore of my firearms after every use. I apply gun oil maybe once every one or two years.
Even with this very limited maintainance they all look just as good and shoot as well as when I first bought them.

Last time I cleaned any firearms was over 20 years ago.

I used to tear down my pistols and clean and lightly lube all the parts after use and then a quick wipe down with WD40 when assembled.

For big bore CF rifles the barrel got swabbed out with a bronze bush and Sweets 7.62 bore cleaner from the breach end using a bolt guide. The was followed by a light bore swabbing with WD40 which was swabbed out with a dry patch before the next use if I could not fire a fouling shot before use. The receiver lug raceways and lug lock recesses got a cleaning too. The metal parts got a wipe down with WD40 lastly. The bolts got disassembled and cleaned several times a year.

The only firearm that ever gave me grief and it was not for lack of maintenance was my BSA CF long range match rifle. It had a tendency to break extractors so I took to carry a couple of spares with me to matches.
