One night, I had a chicken killed in our little coup while I slept. I found the damage the next morning; I could see a hole dug from the alley side but no footprints. However the next day during daylight I heard a commotion from the hen house so I grabbed my .17 airgun and ran out to see what was up. Through the fence I could see a full grown raccoon running way from my coup in the alley way.

I opened the fence's gate and as the little critter started to turn I put a round right behind his left shoulder. I must have gotten lucky as he made it about 10 yards and faltered. I waited till he was completely still then I nudged him and he was dead. So I put him a black garbage bag and put him in the city garbage can.

While I got lucky the little Bastehard never got another one of my laying hens!

With that said 'IF' I'd gotten caught by the City I'd have had to pay a nice fine.

Hell, it's illegal to even target practice with an air rifle here.

    Yikes! no air guns.

Here in Washington State raccoons are not protected and can be dispatched if become a nuisance and or damaging property. Local law will vary.

Sun-sonic, 710 fps, 40 grain, hollow point 22 cal. in a long barrel can make less noise than a pellet gun. The impact makes more noise than the discharge and there is no squealing.

As far as either an 'air gun' or a 22 gun powered shot/it doesn't matter 'here' as it's illegal to fire either in the city limits.

As far as the '22; I believe that what you are referring to is what at a time was called a 22 'Short' and I was going to PM you and recommend using it! Your Kill Rate will go up substantially! Regardless of what the coons 'see' or hear' the kill rate will be beneficial as their population Will Decrease. (The State of Washington Digresses)

It would be interesting to compare how these two rounds would compare as to 'Quiet'

    CCI Quiet-22 22 LR, 40 grains, 710 fps

    VS

    27 grains, 1105 fps

    jmercer,
That RWS is a great rifle. You should be able to headshot a raccoon out to 35 yards or so without a scope. I shoot problem bunnies when I see them, the Coyotes and Bobcats clean up the mess in no time flat. At least the Coyotes and Bobcats don't destroy our garden.

They pop to much. I tried several different rounds and it has to be under 980fps for my vintage (was father's) Remington Model 34 rifle 24" barrel. Pistol no way. It is at night so it is even quieter with sound carry.

Range is only 70' at longest and most are 20' to 35'. Easy money. They dropped like stones and on a good night I filled a garbage can so that was not an option.

    Sorry we drifted.

I'm an iron sight shooter. Never really got into scopes. USMC was an excellent teacher.

I now use the RWS .17 with RWS 8.2 grainers Superpoint Extra pellets. I get the penetration but it doesn't drop them in their tracks.

Fatally wounding them and sending them chirping off into the night gets the message to all the ones I don't see like the alpha raccoon. It's been March since last one we saw. It was funny. It was skulking across yard and wife pointed. I barely touched the patio slider and it latterly flew out of the yard, clearing the fence like a bobcat looking like it had been shot out of a gun. They are very fast when they want to be. They will run you down too.

    Cuda,
My Air Arms TX200 Mk3 is a 177 pellet weighing a measly 10.65 grains the rifle spits it out at about 850 fps. So I only have about 17.5 FPE, no contest. Of course this pellet only cost about 3 cents a round. I do have a Rapid Air Weapons HM1000x .25 cal. airgun that spits out a .33.95 grain pellet at 950 fps. That's about 68.05 FPE. Here's a photo.
