So, I went to Art Brown's pen store in NYC last week and picked up a Lamy Safari and a few cartridges. Everything I read online and the guy in the store indicated that it was a bit of a no brainer for a starter pen. I also picked up a bottle of Lamy black ink and a converter.
It writes very smoothly and so far I'm pleased. I've asked my wife to get me an upgrade for our anniversary. Frankly, I was overwhelmed by all the choices in the store. Shopping for my next pen will have to be another day. I do like the styling and shape of some of the Sheaffers though.

depending on what kind of things you do with your pen, the Lamy ink will be ok (it's not very permanent, do NOT write checks with it) but I advise upgrading to Noodler's, especially one of their Bulletproof inks. if you are just using it for journaling and such, you'll be fine.
+1 on the Schaeffer pens, I love the inlaid nib!

My daily carry is 2 or 3 Fisher Space pens. I have a custom one with my name and corporate logo engraved, in "blueberry" finish. One basic black "bullet" pen that is usually in my right pants pocket, and is well worn.. goes pretty much everywhere with me. A chrome bullet that is clipped in my wallet (I don't like to be without a pen, so when I forget the other 2 I still have this one). And my first Fisher is in my usual travel bag (wanted to have a pen when I travel).
I like the spacepens for their reliability and durability. Not really "fine writing" but they work. I have used them for writing upside down on rusty sheetmetal, marking wood for cutting, etc.
I do have one Waterman fountain pen that I got when I was 13, I use it primarily for writing in my journal etc. It's a fairly cheap one, just basic plastic body cost about $30 at the time (1998?). Marble green finish. For whatever reason green is no longer a favorite color of mine, I usually wear blues and blacks these days. (oddly I'm wearing a green shirt as I write this though). I'm looking to upgrade though so I might start a new topic on that!

I too carry a fisher space bullet ALL the time. In my line of work (industral mechanic/machinist) a foutain is not good for everyday use. I do however have a couple of fountain pens I carry when not working. A parker 21 from the fleamarket is my current favorite I paid .50 for it it is green and after cleanup it writes really nice. I bought a retro 51 tornado fountain that I am not too impressed with. Should have saved the money and bought a vanishing point.

A Monteverde Invincia Black Tie, Retro 51 Tornado SS and a Retro 51 Tornado SS mechanical pencil.
Unfortunately in my line of work (law enforcement) I don't know if I can use a fountain pen. Would really like to though.

Thanked: 995Original flat black Namiki VP, alternating with a Conklin Twain and a Namiki Falcon.
Great hobby, fiddling with live ink, a lot like shooting and shaving with a straight. You damn well better have your mind on at the moment or something will happen.“Nothing discloses real character like the use of power. Most people can bear adversity. But if you wish to know what a man really is, give him power.” R.G.Ingersoll
