Since I just picked it up Tuesday it has to be my Wilson Stealth in 45, of course. Now I have to sell four to cover the cost but will not be selling my Wilson Professional, my other equally favorite handgun. Both are EDC's, no safe queens for me.

Thanked: 13245
Do you feel it more as a push Jimmy..
To my shoulder it is a different feel then firing a Modern Bottleneck round, they feel more like a sharp snap punch to the shoulder where the straight walled rifle cartridges feel more like a shove..
The force (ft/lbs) here is not what I mean, more the "feel" of the kick
You ???

Well I always wanted a Winchester High Wall and the B-78 was close enough. So I got it in 45-70 and bought 40 rounds of factory 400 grn ammo to spend a day at the range.
I fired 2 rounds and limped out of there with my tail between my legs feeling I'd made a big mistake. Luckily the range master introduced me to the PAST Super Mag Plus Recoil Pad Shield Ambidextrous and then I could shoot the thing for 20 - 30 rounds at a range session.
Without the pad it feels like Mike Tyson just hammered me.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 3225Glen, you brought up a good point on the way the felt recoil differs. Some rifles have more of a push than a vicious snap to their recoil. I had a 444 Marlin and a 375 H&H mag Brno that gave a push when recoiling and not a vicious snap like a 7 Rem mag I had. I am thinking it is a result of a combination of large case capacity and smallish bore for the case capacity.

Shortly after getting the B-78 in 45-70 I went into Gander Mountain (big mistake) and saw a Miroku made Winchester High Wall in 38-55 with a 16" bbl. It was the 'trapper' model and I couldn't resist. You basically have to reload to shoot it but that didn't stop me. Finally got dies and what have you, and took it out to the range.
Now a friend who went with me cannot understand why I want single shot rifles at all, and especially those that visibly drive my shoulder back in recoil. I just say 'if you don't know and I tried to explain you wouldn't understand' ...... anyway. That little high wall snaps in recoil.
So now I had the 38-55 dies and ran up on a Marlin (pre Remington arms) in 38-55. A 28" barrel lever action. (I have to avoid gun shops like the plague) So taking that to the range I was amazed at how nice it is to shoot.
Has that push y'all are talking about instead of the snap. Anyway ...... as the kids say ......... It's all good !

Not a big rifle fan, but I like my Glock 17 and my 357 revolver. I want one of the new smith and Wesson 9mm revolvers, but they are almost a grand and my wife might kill me if I brought one home.

Thanked: 13245I have a Recoil pad for bench, for most everything but the .22 calibers
Honestly I hate shooting the GG off the bench rest the ergo sets you up to get hammered, offhand I find it much more comfortable a shooter, plus mine is a first year production model so I have the Mag-n-Ported barrel from the factory
I had a ton of room left in the Velocity department when I loaded for this rifle, I basically ran the loads up 1 grain at a time until it started popping the lever open from recoil.. Then I backed it down 1/2 grain at a time for accuracy, settled out at a good balance point at 1450 fps which is just about 200 fps above Factory 405 gr loads...
I hear and agree Bob
I hated shooting my 7mm Rem Mag hated it only rifle I ever owned that never had a kill..
I have had some heavy shooters too, .338 Rem Mag .300 Rem mag even the 30-378 Weatherby Mag none of them slapped as hard as that 7mm 700 Rem,,, Finally sold her
If I decide to hunt down by Salmon ID again I think I am going back to a .338, hits harder down range, and hits softer on my shoulder hehehe
To my shoulder there is a difference in actual recoil force vs felt recoil vs perceived recoilLast edited by gssixgun; 12-31-2015 at 09:14 PM.
