I think the idea is that it's not only recycled, but that more is added in to bulk up. I'm sure there are a lot of people who take too much protein though...it's bound to happen.

I have found protein to be extremely helpful when lifting weights, it helps me get stronger faster and recover quicker than not taking it. There are definitely limits, though, and some people take it too far. Some of my buddies who are hardcore irongamers take 1 gram or more per pound of body weight. So, they are taking 200+ grams of protein a day, which seems ridiculous. I limit myself to less than 100g, because I am not trying to gain a ton of weight this season, just put some more plates on the bar.

I like the protein supplements because they are natural, don't have much fat or cholesterol, and are pretty easy to deal with. I don't want to be a walking pharmacy like Ronnie Coleman or anything, but I've found that training without any supplements at all just doesn't get you anywhere.

OK, this is a debate I know better than getting into so I won't. I know about cellular breakdown post exercise due to my research, not my lengthy gym time, but I won't change anyone's mind. I also have doubts about any protein supplement being "natural" but I suppose everyone has their own definition.

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Protien is a good choice. It is a blend of whey isolate and concentrate, plus lactase enzyme. If you shop around you can find it for about $7.00 per pound which is pretty good for a quality whey protien product. Vitaminshoppe was selling it in ten pound "dog food" bags. It comes in all the standard flavors: vanilla, chocolate, etc. I think ON also produces a flavorless and non-sweetened version for those that want to avoid artificial sweeteners.

Or, you can do what many of the bodybuilders used to recommend to me back in the eighties when I was working out at the original World Gym in Santa Monica, California (Joe Gold was the owner - Arnold, Zane, Dickerson, Ferrigno, etc, lifted there regularly) drink milk...

I've found the same. I can work out and not take anything and end up being sore longer and not really have anything to show for it. Take some protein and boom, feelin' better and lifting more. Something else that has helped me is called No Xplode. It's more or less an energy supplement, but it has been awesome to use.

    BSN Online - Products - N.O.-Xplode

Ignore the cheesy power lifter looking crap- it's a good product. I've experienced all the benefits it gives in this list:

    N.O.-Xplode Highlights:

    • Training energy, motivation and intensity
    • Mental alertness and focus
    • Muscle fullness, vascularity and pumps
    • Strength, power, endurance and work capacity
    • Resistance to muscular fatigue
    • Healthy Nitric Oxide (N.O.) levels; blood flow and delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscle tissue

    N.O.-Xplode Benefits:

    • Maximizes training intensity, energy and motivation for any athletic activity, or fitness regimen
    • Enhances mental focus and acuity; helps establish mind-muscle connection during physical activities and sporting events
    • Increases resistance to muscular fatigue, power output and overall work capacity
    • Elevates blood flow and delivery of oxygen and nutrients
    • Zero sugar; ideal performance and energy igniter for low carb diet

It's one of those things that before I started taking it, I had zero desire to start or complete my workout, and I was always very fatigued afterward. When I take it (make sure to do it on an empty stomach and don't shake it!), I just feel like working out (or any tedious activity) isn't a big deal. I go, ride my ass off on the bike, row like a crew member, then continue on with my day. There's no recovery time needed post-workout, and I don't huff and puff toward the end. The next day all I feel is the good feeling that comes with being active.

It's got a bit in there about focus, and that's absolutely true. For me, there are certain things that I have no will or want to focus on. I drink some No Xplode, and 30 minutes later I'm soaking up the driest information.

The best part on top of all those benefits is that it's not a high, so there's no crash. You take it and get on with your life. Obviously if you take it in the morning, the effects wear off later, but it's about the same as how you feel more alert during certain times of the day.

You can usually get a sample from the stores for free since the tub is a little expensive. If you end up wanting to buy some though, I'll get you the link for the place I buy mine.

I second what QuickO said. NO-xplode is the best supplement I have ever taken. Its not a protein supplement if your wondering, but I highly recommend it for someone looking to push harder during workouts, get better gains from it, and have more energy and focus afterwards. I can't say enough about how much I love this stuff!!!

ok, I'm definitely going to have to give it a try. I think (from the pic) that they carry it at the smoothie king down the street... what flavors are good?
