I'm from Northern California I've always liked learning about new strange foods, one of them I saw on T.V. was balut, then one time I was visiting with my dad in the hospital and talking to his Filipino nurse and brought it up. She said she could get it for me if I wanted to try it.
I try lots of weird stuff that way, I'll see it, think it looks cool, and then by chance I'll meet someone who can set me up.

Thanked: 278I just want to thank you for making the first photo a bit out of focus.
The Wiki link says it is often served with beer. I think I know why!

Reminds me of a Discovery (or Nat. Geo.) documentary on India where they eat goat embryos they find inside a slaughtered goat.
Apparently lots of Indians find it disgusting, it is not sold openly, you have to know the butcher well and order in advance.Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose. Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr.

Thanked: 369I sometimes watch Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel. That guy would eat the @$$ out of a dead rhino if you gave him some salt and lemon juice to go with it.
I consider myself pretty adventurous when it comes to food. I especially like to try ethnic specialties to get the real flavor of a culture - but Balut? Things that make you go - ewwwwwww!
I'm sure that it is delicious, but oh the nightmares.
