I attended a bull fight while a Marine stationed in Ecuador. It was a full day of pageantry (sp) and bull fighting. I enjoyed the day as a whole. Like Ray, the cultural aspect of it especially. Yes, it was exciting. And a bit disturbing.

That was 30 years ago. I'm sure it hasn't changed since. Would I go again? Probably not. Do I value the experience? Yes.

I heard Friday that American rodeo is becoming popular in Spain and may actually replace bullfights.

Scientists proved long ago that bulls do not feel pain.

    You must be joking...

    http://www.avatau.com/ENG_INFORME_VETERINARIO.doc

The animal SUFFERS GREATLY in a corrida. That's a fact.

The question is, some people justify that suffering with all that "culture", "art", "manliness", "the bull has a chance" crap, others don't.

According to a spanish culture ministery's poll, 91% of the spanish population has NEVER been in a bullfight. You could say we are not very interested in that kind of "culture".

Barcelona is declared antitaurine city. 70% of the catalonians are against bullfighting.

There's a real oposition to bullfighting in spain, but it's ignored because all the money that bullfighting moves, tourism, jobs... and because any political party that would support laws against bullfightings would lose many votes in the regions where bullfighting is more traditional, like Andalucia.

Sorry Ray, for turning your thread into a bulls-yes bulls-no discussion. Did you get a good price for the #14? I'm going to Madrid next month, maybe I'll visit that cutlery.

I can tell you that is veeeery wrong, Rodeos in Spain are as popular as Monster Trucks shows or Beauty and the Beast on Ice... just the new show in town (nothing wrong with that).

LOL, I hope you meant this as a joke. Bullfight to Spain is like Baseball to America. Bullfighters who nobody ever heard of outside of Spain are huge celebrities there. There's just too much history and tradition to it in Spain for it to fade any time soon, IMO.
