Default Care & Maintenance Of Our Firearms

A couple of months ago, I sent a PM to the O.P., d.m. ellington, asking if it would be OK with him to include the care & maintenance of firearms in this thread. He , the O.P. , has been away for a few months & has not been able to reply to my PM, so I will make this post & when he returns, should he feel its not appropriate, then I will ask the MODS to remove this post or open another thread with it.

My concern was to not start another "Firearms" thread on a shaving forum. We have been lucky enough to keep a couple going over the years.

Here is my simple way of cleaning my firearms, since I don't have a garage or workshop.

Any methods of tips you have on maintaining your firearms, then please post them.

Like I said, should d.m. ellington not approve, then it's my bad,,, as the kids say.

You clean your firearms ? This is why everyone should own a Glock ......... no cleaning necessary ....... works first time, every time ....

I had a shooting friend recommend using the dishwasher for Glocks. I tried it after burning through some dirty Wolf ammunition. I did a field strip of upper slide, recoil spring, barrel, and lower. I put the recoil spring/guiderod and barrel with the spoons, forks, and butter knives and the upper/lower on the top rack and washed it with dishes. After it was sparkly clean, I re-assembled and rinsed it with spray CLP, cycled it a few times, let drip dry for a lil while, wiped it down and put it back in the safe. I/we have 3 in 9mm & I have considered a 45 acp in the mid size.

I was kidding about not cleaning my guns. Even Glocks sometimes.

I have a tackle box with my cleaning gear in it. I'm an old timer so Hoppe's #9 Nitro Solvent, Outer's gun oil, though I'm not carved in stone on that brand, like I am on the Hoppe's.

Hickok45 has some interesting videos on youtube on cleaning firearms. I've learned a thing or two watching him in the past year, and I thought after 50 years of doing it I knew it all. So an old dog can learn new tricks.

Try Kroil....you can find it on Midway. I have been using it exclusively on all my firearms for 15 years with great success. Lubricates and cleans in one shot. (Pun intended) I shoot a lot and I have used it on everything. (sniper rifles, suppressors, Glock)

I forgot about bore snakes (old timer's disease) Man, those things are the cat's whiskers. I was kind of sceptical of them at first, but now I have one for every family of calibers and take the 'right' one to the range with whatever I'm shooting that day. The only thing that I see as a negative ..... with me personally ...... is it is so easy to run the snake through a couple of times when I'm done shooting and call it good. IOW, not clean the firearm thoroughly.

Don't thank me, thank Jimmy;he made this a separate thread.
I would only ask that everyone keep in mind its a "maintenance of firearms" thread & not a thread other firearm topics.

Jimmy I agree, the snake is great as a easy peasey bore cleaner for my rifles , but I'm a stickler for breaking down the bcg and chamber cleaning also. The revolvers get the bore brush and patch beating lol

Ditto here. The ole #9, Kroil for long guns, everything in between, including the kitchen sink(dishwasher for the Glock . Kroil on the 762 and 308s .. Bore snakes, yes. Cats whiskers.

Given that, though, I'm more a detail strip kinda guy, well, except for the ole Kalash... she gets rough treatment. It does depend on the firearm.

    Safe shootin, all!

Thanks John for the good post. I hope it holds and, if not, I understand.

EDIT:: Whoops, whoops, whoops. I just looked at the title and realized I was just jawing a bit about cleaning. Maintenance should be it's own thread entirely.
