Thanked: 293Catholic school boy here. Tied all of the ties with the exception of the bow tie. It depends on the collar. The pratt, half windsor, and 4 in hand knots are too small for wide collars.
I grew up tying pratts and 4in hands, but now I shift between half and full windsors depending on collar. For narrow collars the half windsor is a little "deeper", and therefore jumps up from the collar nicely.

Thanked: 1587I find it does not really matter how you tie your ties, as long as the emblem of your alma mater is visible.

I use either the 1/2 Windsor and the Pratt.
It depends on the shirt collar and tie for me.

First of all, thanks for the link to that very interesting site. And thanks too for cluing me in to the inventor of what I learned as the Shelby knot.
I like the half-Windsor and used it for many years. (Started off, as an ignorant gorky teenager, with a four-in-hand, then in the later sixties learned the full Windsor, but that is a massive knot if the tie is very substantial.) In the past years, though, I've put on weight and my neck size has gone up, and unless I have an extra-long tie, a half-Windsor leaves me with either several inches of shirt between waistband and tie, or a small end that doesn't reach the keeper. So lately it's most often the Pratt.
My son seldom wears ties and sometimes asks me for a refresher on how to tie them. One of my finer instructional moments was talking him through how to tie a Pratt knot as I drove through the (unfamiliar) streets of Madison to a wedding.

I know I tied one right when I take it off and the knot pulls out.

Tied a 1/2 windsor enough through air cadets that I can do it with my eyes closed. Can even tie it on someone else.

Thanked: 24I voted full windsor, just because i really dislike any tie that's not symmetrical.
