    Default The Big Green Egg

    I am looking into purchasing one of these fine BBQ/Smokers, just wanted some opinions on how they perform.

    Lynn and I got into this discussion at about 3AM at the MidMo meetup. Basically we were both talking about how much we loved our eggs. I've had mine for about 6 years. He's had his 6 months. I win! I grill year round. I've grilled in minus 20F snowstorms, I've grilled in pouring rain. It always works great and it is INFINITELY better than any other type of grill.

    Their performance is incredible. You can hold 150-180F steady all night long. You can do pizza or bread at 500 or 600F (I've had mine as high as 750F). I do most of my grilling at between 300 and 350F. Once stabilized, the temp holds rock steady. I've done 23 pound turkeys--bigger would fit in my Large but I've never bought a turkey bigger than that. I have racks to grill up to four levels at once. The BGE does everything I've ever wanted it to do.


    Maybe I should ask it to find me a job?


    One of the many great features of the egg is when you are done cooking you shut it down and all the remaining charcoal is starved of O2 and therefore is preserved for the next time's use. So regardless of how much charcoal you put in, you only burn the amount needed to cook your stuff.

    I thought that there were two of you discussing this at the meet, my apologies, I could not remember who the other person was. In my defense it was at 3am and the brandy may have been a contributing factor as well!

    I've kinda wanted one for 6 years. The only thing that holds me back are the big green dollars you must trade. I guess I'll just keep on being a Weber boy. I've had this one for seven or eight years and it's still cookin'. It sounds like the only things in common with the egg are it works year 'round and snuffs its coal.

    I hear you on the dollars. The only reason I have one is because its former owner wanted an XL and he gave me his L on for some work I did for him. They are fantastic, but I'm too practical (parsimonious, cheap, poor) to buy one for myself. That's the same reason, I don't have a high end razor.

    On the bright side, because of the thickness of the ceramic it is much better insulated than the Weber so it loses a LOT less heat so it uses a lot less charcoal. Of course, it's going to take a long time for your charcoal savings to offset the grill price difference.

    The most amazing thing about the egg is how moist everything is when it comes out. If you are wearing glasses when you open an egg, you are going to be temporarily blinded by the steam accumulating on your glasses. We routinely grill at least 12 pounds of natural chicken breasts (no injected solutions) and when we remove them from the egg, we put them in a colander nested in a bowl to catch the juices draining out of them. This usually amounts to about two cups worth of smoky juicy goodness that is great base for soups and other good stuff. Everything out of the egg is better!

    I've had mine for about 4 years...love it! Really, really durable. Extremely versatile. I routinely get compliments on smoked salmon I cook in the egg. Get one and you'll use it for a lifetime.

    I've had mine for several years and love it.I have the large model. I cook on it two to three times a week.It works great.I use the lump charcoal and an electric starter. It starts easily and produces great flavor without any chemical taste or smell. It is easy to use and it is easy to control the heat depending on what you are cooking.

    It works great both as a grill and a smoker.
