Not necessarily... The bottom may have just been thin...

I don't know if you are a cigar smoker, but what some will do is take some cigar ash, mix it with water and apply it to the bottom of the bowl... Making sure the draft hole isn't blocked... They call this pipe mud...

If your crafty, find a hardwood dowel, drill the bottom of the pipe out and fit & glue a small piece of the dowel...

The higher end cobs, Freehand, Diplomat, Mark Twain, Generals and so on have a hardwood plug in them to keep the burn out to a minimum...

That happens to be the Russian or Slavic cross. Greek Orthodox is a little different. Love my Slavic peoples.

Well I'm finally moved in and most of the house is unpacked.

Over the weekend I was able to have a bit of blessing wrapped in a curse. Last week my a great family friend died. Rodney literally grew up in a boxcar, moving out on his 12th birthday. By 16 he was married, owned his home, owned his car and was still attending school. When my father was a child, though not always innocent, would often get kicked out of his parents house. Rodney would without fail take him in, even though he was only 10 years older than my dad and had two small children of his own to care for. Later his oldest son, Marty, became great friends with my dad; eventually he and his wife set my parents up together. Throughout my child hood both Marty and Rodney were always there. Even though Marty had his own kids, and Rodney grandchildren they were often at any birthday, competition, performance, or school event.

Rodney may have died, but after the funeral some of his old friends, his sons, my father and I got together to do what he liked best. Sit around, smoke cigars, drink whiskey, shoot the shit and most importantly remember his life. Overall I think it was a great moment for all present, that will not soon be forgotten.
