Type of pipe is more personal preference...I'd recommend going to a local pipe shop and having a look around at what they have in stock. Pipes come in lots of sizes, shapes and colors. Some are factory made and some are hand made. Tell the staff what kind of cigars you are used to and they should be able to recommend some tobaccos for you to try based on that. I like heavier, earthier cigars and have become quite a fan of the english/balkan/oriental tobacco types. A good forum to check out is: smokersforum.co.uk - lots of good advice and people on there!

nessmuck,
My advice is, take Eric's advice, not mine; Or, "get thee to a tobacconist".
My other advice is: Start off with a straight billiard and Vanilla Cavendish. Straight billiards are always/never stylish or, "classic". They are also easy to get a cleaner through during your smoke. Vanilla Cavendish is mild and tasty but, has a tendency to smoke wet thus, the cleaner in mid-smoke. Be patient, smoke slowly and don't worry about your pipe going out and having to relight. Experiment, experiment and experiment some more. Buy small quantities of tobaccos your tobacconist recommends. Clean your pipe after every smoke and remember a briar pipe will need to rest a minimum of a week after two bowls. This is why most pipe smokers have many. Study, read, be patient and don't take anyone's advice as gospel. Pipe smoking is a skill similar to straight shaving. It takes some time to develop an amount of proficiency. But, when you do, it can be a sublime experience and enjoyable hobby.
I wish you success in your quest!

in addition:
I learned, a briar pipe should rest 24 hours after one bowl (better longer) so you keep your briar dry. A dry pipe tasts better and smells better.
