Thanked: 488Les Wood---Ferndown
Hey ETom that Les Wood is very nice:-) I don't if if you know this or not but Les Wood is actually a Ferndown just an earlier edition. When Les left Dunhill some backers talked him into making his own line of pipes thus Les Wood pipes. He only made them a few years but basically what you have is a pipe that equals or exceeds a Dunhill. Most of the ones he made were smooths so the sandblast finish is even more rare. Later on he restarted the business under the Ferndown name.
I used to be big into pipes and did the website for one of the larger online pipe dealers so I went to all the shows like Chicago, St Louis etc about six big shows a year. I got to meet Les and his wife and he is one nice guy who loves to talk about his trade. We would sit with others in our hotel room and talk and smoke pipes until the wee hours and it was a blast!
Just a little background for ya:-)

Thanked: 488You bet ETom. I'm into the history of pipes as bad as razors--LOL! Les sure makes one of the very best pipes on the planet. He only made the Les Wood brand for three years so if somebody tries to talk you out of it---well lets just say it's worth a lot more than you paid I betcha
He lets his Briar sit for up to ten years before he ever thinks about carving a pipe. His are all plateau briar of the best grade from the Mediterranean area. Finding old Ebuchons is getting harder and harder but he seems to be able to deal with those who have the best. It doesn't hurt that he stockpiled a ton of Briar either:-)
Mine is a smooth finish that looks identical to a Dunhill LBS. I do love his pipes!!!

I am very happy, that I bought these pipes some years ago.
You're a lucky man to get the chance speaking with Les personally.
Again, many thanks for your information-very interesting!
Regards
Tom
PS: I'll try to give you in the next pictures a view at the signatures at these pipes.

Thanked: 488Yes that's the older signature used at that time. That style Bulldog has been carried over to the Ferndown line along with the nice .925 silver band. That one is in wonderful condition as well.
He didn't use the star classification back then to indicate size but these days that one would most likely be a 3 star in size. The thick walls of that shape make the tobacco burn cooler so you get a much better true taste of the tobacco. It sure is a keeper!!!
Oh one more thing some folks call that shape a Rhodesian but either one is correct. Another interesting fact is even after he left Dunhill he still made all the silver bands for them under contract simply because his silver work was so good!Last edited by Gunner777; 09-20-2010 at 06:34 AM.
