Thanked: 33I know this is a SR forum, but wanted to ask the opinion of the folks using this thread. I know there are forums around regarding pipes and cigars, but I greatly appreciate and trust the opinions here.
I am a cigarette smoker, about 1/2 to 3/4 a pack a day. I want to quit. I have been able to do this for periods of time, but unfortunately I do enjoy smoking.
I was considering trying out a pipe. I feel like it would make ditching cigarettes more bearable if I had something to fall back on 2 to 3 times a day (I'm guessing cheaper and slightly healthier too). Has anyone here made that switch? Is it worth a shot? I have read a lot of stuff, but was hoping to get some real life experience mixed in before making the investment.
As a side note, I enjoy the aromatics of good cigars, but just am not a fan of partaking more than two or three times a year...I find most to be a bit too "thick", or maybe "harsh"...hard to find the right words to describe why I don't enjoy it...

Thanked: 1263I wouldn't say I've made the switch, as I like you do enjoy smoking cigarettes too much to quit. My mum asks me often when I'm gonna quit..I tell her and everyone else, when I'm dead..lol. But I do enjoy a good pipe and if it makes you feel any better research does say it is "better" for you...most of the bad stuff from cigs is in the paper and the way the tobacco is farmed and treated. I do notice that the pipe tobacco is far less harsh and of course tastier
I find nothing more calming and satisfying than sitting down with a good bowl and a glass of whiskey to accompany it after a day at work or whenever. I'm lucky though, my wife and kids love the smell of the tobacco so they all encourage me and enjoy it as well.
So as a smoker of cigs, cigars, and pipes I can only encourage you to partake...but in the end if I had to choose only one, in all honesty it would be pipes, because there's so many tobaccos you can try and the pipe or pipes you choose is a reflection of self. Hope this helps

Thanked: 32Only way to find out is to try. Find a corncob pipe and try out some blends. The range of diversity with pipe tobacco is huge. Hard to imagine someone that enjoys tobacco wouldn't find something to suit their taste.
I have never been a cigarette smoker, so I can't help with that part of it.

Thanked: 1160The hardest part of quitting cigs is weaning yourself off the highly addictive chemicals in them. I was a former cig smoker quit twice. I also lost both my folks to stroke and lung cancer. None of these are the reasons why I am a pipe smoker now though. I chose willingly to smoke a pipe and I love it. Some times I'll smoke my pipe all week long and some times I'll only smoke 3-4 times a month . I just don't get the addictive cravings with a pipe. I smoke when I actually like to. Pipe tobacco is more natural .There are additives of course for the aromatics for flavoring, but you don't get the science lab of bad stuff like in a cigarette. Like was suggested, start out with a cob as they are cheap and easy to break in(actually very little if no break in time). Don't expect it to replace the cigarette.it will be a different kind of smoke. It is very relaxing and enjoyable, but you will as stated have to get over the chemical craving in cigs. Most cigarette smokers may not agree with me but I can say as a former smoker ,that what I thought was enjoyment was more than likely chemical dependency . Just my opinion and just bein honest is all. Good luck and welcome to SRP and our wonderful pipe thread.

OK, EdG, here's my take on it, for what it's worth. I smoke cigarettes, and, due to this site, I enjoy pipes as well. That should be taken as it is written, I smoke cigarettes, and enjoy a pipe. It's a different form of smoking. A pipe is very nice, a smooth, relaxing way to unwind. A way to slow down and enjoy the things around you, to contemplate things, a ritual of sorts. Smoking a cigarette fulfills a need, your desire for nicotine. I've quit smoking cigarettes, for over a year, but went back, looking for the comfort and calmness that nicotine brings. I tried cigars, I know what you mean when you say too thick, you were probably smoking them like a cigarette, too quick, looking for your quick fix. You won't get a quick fix from a pipe.
But don't take this wrong, introducing a pipe will get you to cut down on cigarettes. The only reason I sound like I have such a defeatist attitude to your plight, is in what you wrote, "unfortunately I do enjoy smoking". What you won't get with a pipe is the convenience. Here's where there's hope. If you start smoking a pipe, do so to enjoy the smoking of the pipe. You just might find that your consumption of cigarettes will go down. Then, who knows, maybe you can just put them in the past and find satisfaction with your pipe. I hope all the best for you!! You will love a pipe!! I encourage you to get one, as has already been mentioned, a cob is a great start.
Remember, what I have said is based on my experience only, I have an addictive nature. I can't do just a little, I want the whole hog. As they love to say around here, YMMV! I do find when I spend time with a pipe, I don't smoke as many coffin nails.
Good luck and welcome aboard!! Now, buy a cob and some good smokeage and take some time to enjoy it!!!

Yeah, this is the second time this bottle has shown up in your pictures. I tried to research it, I remember tincture of iodine from doing basic vet stuff on animals, but when I looked up the rest, it went to some bulb type plant. I thought it was some new, basic label, (very basic), label aftershave. I love old bottles, I've seen some that once contained poison, but the bottle was cast/made with bumps all over it, to let someone know in the night that they had grabbed the wrong bottle. Well, wrong if they weren't really looking for that anyway.
