So to all the tobacco hoarders like me... Has anyone done business with Sterling Tobaccos out of Sterling, IL?

I'll get an email once and awhile and the web page is very plain... Tobaccos, pipe tobacco, tobacco blends

I know that in the past I have heard some that buy from Jack...

So I take a small trip to my local B&M yesterday with the thought of maybe trying a go at an Aromatic that doesn't suck. Looking over the tobacco tins I start reading over a few of the tins to see what I might like, keeping in mind what Night blade said about Mac Barrens blends he likes. I was approached by a guy looking at baccy next to me who interrupted me and said "you like Aromatics?" I responded "not really no but am looking for one that actually tastes like it smells." He grinned exposing his brown pipe stained teeth and pointed at a tin of Sutliff Molto Dolce and convinced me to try it. So 10 bucks lighter I walked out with it, skeptical that it was going to be another bitey goopey mess that I wasn't going to even get through a bowl of before it became vile. Opened the tin and was struck with an intense caramel, honey and boozy rum tin note. This isn't subtle, I thought. The tobacco blend, burley, virginia, cavendish was wet and oily, no way was I going to try this in one of my better pipes. I got out my old Dr. Grabows and packed the thing. First light sputtered and crackled like there was gunpowder in the bowl, I tamped re lit and it calmed down after a few tamps. Well not bad i thought tasted caramel notes and something akin to creme brulee, maybe a little rum. the tobacco didn't assert itself until about half way down but it started to marry well with the flavors and for once I didn't taste any artificial sweetness I seem to associate most aromatics with. Certainly makes for a good air freshener lol, the room note is fairly pleasant. All in all a pretty nice smoke good flavor but doesn't satisfy my palate on the tobacco spectrum. Surprising to me is that it burned quite evenly and not too hot and didnt get gunked up mid bowl as well no tongue bite. i think this blend is a success for aromatic lovers. A good aromatic experience in my opinion and i have had enough bad ones to turn me off to them. I may or may not buy this one again but who knows after i finish the tin how I would feel but I have a lot more serious tobaccos to explore and enjoy in my sights.

Try the Black Ambrosia then. It's definitely more like a straight Virginia and I am finding I really like it. It's not a syrupy breakfast in a tin at all. I think you will like it.

Never heard of him Nosey...not sure what to make of him looking at the sight .

So then.....speaking of aromatics. I got this one to actually use as a sort of filler to go along with my pilots mix when I wanted a little something extra. I'm currently smoking some full strength in a pipe I haven't used much and so far no tongue bite, great flavor and aroma, burns even and low to no relights and wonderful plumes of smoke... so,I'm backing this one up as thumbs up !

It's a collaboration between Russ Oulette of Pipes and Cigars and Mike McNiel of McClelland's and it really delivers on the aroma and flavor of Chocolate and Nuts in the the bowl and in the tin.

That being said Mike and Russ "The Mind Meld" Chocolate Nut Tobacco in a Butz Choquine Rustic Carat.
I keep lickin my lips and tasting it ha ha...tasty !

I have dealt with Jack at Sterling. He has some real good blends. I like the 1776 line of tobaccos he carries. I have a few baggies at the house that I am still working on. I believe I got "Old Dominion", "Musket Blend", "Vermont Maple" and a few others from him that I like a good bit. I did take him up on his offer of a "Grab Bag" of mixed tobaccos from the blending tables. It showed up, and I tried it and it ended up tasting like fragrant soap. You may get a different batch though if you go that route.
