Doing brainwork this evening and I really don't feel like it. Gotta harness my chi. How better to do so than a heaping helping of the old Ludwig Von

Alan Doyle of Great Big Sea fame with a beautiful song that will be appreciated by anyone who has lived in a part of the world whose biggest export has been their youngest and brightest.

A bit of context: Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 after a long, bitter, and divisive debate. "Mr. Smallwood" was Joey Smallwood, the man who dragged Nfld into confederation, and he is loved and despised by Newfoundlanders in near equal measure to this day. And leaving to 'be Canadian' is a reference to the many thousands of young Newfoundlanders who have moved west to the mainland in search of work. It's a sad tradition that has ripped the heart from many a community in that wonderful part of the world.

Trivia #1: he co-wrote this with his pal Russell Crowe

Trivia #2: In the early 90s I took Alan's passport photo on a Saturday morning when I worked in a camera store in St John's. We had both been at a Great Big Sea gig and after show until the wee hours of that same morning. It was not the best portrait I ever took...

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.
This was and still is my favorite combination; beautiful, original, and worn.

"Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
she broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah"

    Hallelujah, Leonard Cohen

Here's a tough question: which version is your favourite? I used to always say Jeff Buckley followed closely by Rufus Wainwright, and of course The Man himself, then I heard this:

The history of the song is pretty amazing. Cohen wrote some 80 verses originally. When the first person (sorry, can't remember who) asked him for the lyrics to do a cover, they apparently sat staring at a fax machine in shock as page after page after page came spitting out.

It was in original condition, faded red, well-worn, but nice.

I tried to watch that version on Youtube earlier but was not able because I was using an iPhone. Thanks for posting it!

I enjoy the covers by Lang and the others you mentioned, plus Kurt Nilsen, but Leonard's is still my favorite. 80 original verses? I knew there were additional lyrics, but wow.

There must be something infectious about that song. It's been stuck in my head for the last three hours.
