No worries, I'm just starting the seeds indoors to be ready in five weeks! It's that the first sunny days always give me garden fever and I can't wait to get out there and get my hands dirty.
I'm not even trimming the grapes yet, or unwrapping the fig tree! I should be able to trim the peach tree by next weekend, though. I should get a whole bunch of peaches this year.

Thanked: 5I'm very jealous of you guys! I was clearing my driveway for 3 hours of snow last night, and the temperature right now is -20 C (-4 F) with a -27 C (-16F) windchill. Good ol' Canada.
I need to get started with some propagation, but this year I'm planning on growing a few varieties of tobacco (I don't smoke other than the odd cigar, but I'm interested in the process of growing/curing), 3 or 4 hop vines, and veggies (SWMBO has the veggie list).
I'd like to get some fruit trees started this year as well, and maybe start keeping some bees.
I moved to my acreage in the fall, and the gardens have been under snow since then, but by an aerial photo (google maps) they seem to be about 50x100 ft each (there are two).
I'm pretty sure we'll only be planting one of them this year, and maybe only part of that haha... it's a lot of space. I'll get pictures when the snow starts receding .

Thanked: 13246Garden - 2014
Reviving an old thread rather than starting a new one...
So might not look like it today but this will be the new garden, the wife and I had quite a bit of fun last year with our first one up here..
We sure learned a lot, mostly that growing food isn't as easy as many think
The past couple of weekends I was helping out with some Charity Work for the FNRA, so I spent a weekend at a Gun & Horn show and a weekend at a Banquet with what most would call a bunch of gun nuts
It was rather interesting how many people are now thinking of growing at least a small garden, regardless of what you think about prepping/survivalists etc: simple things like the drought in Cali can drastically change the costs and availability of fresh vegetables..
Last year we grew a 50 sq/foot garden, and most of it went to feeding the local deer. this year we have decide to greatly expand that, and to invest in putting up fencing..
I am planning on using the Southern facing side of the shop and build off of there, the fence will be built in sections that can be stored so that only the posts will be left out each Winter... I am planning to leave enough space to be able to drive the Tractor through there with a Plow and a Tiller to turn the soil when needed... What will be really nice is if we get totally crazy we can extend this out to almost 2 acres and encompass a natural spring that comes up just out of the frame of this pic...
I know it doesn't look like much today buried under the snow still but I will update as it progresses...
Would love to hear and see pics from others that are growing their own food... any hints will be greatly appreciated, other then to move farther South that just isn't funnyLast edited by gssixgun; 03-12-2014 at 12:54 AM.

My wife and I grow a garden. Ask away... Off the top, compost! You get great soil that way. Takes time though. If you can, rase your beds - it saves the back. And finally, give back. You're not going to use it all. Let the bunny's have thier day to. A garden works with its surrounding area - pull out the gun last.
Good luck!! You're going to love it!David
