I don't know that I can afford to drink that on the road! Once, I was at a huge conference filled with neuroscientists in DC, and I had to get away from Neuroscientists for a bit for a sanity check.

I took a like-minded pal to a cigar and martini lounge. There were a bunch of older gentlemen there with their nieces, I think. In any case, we started smoking cigars and drinking rounds of Mac 18. I still have nightmares about that tab.

The Mac 25 bottle I have comes in a little wood case that reminds me of the Holy Ark.

Years ago I wound up going out to dinner with a small group that included two VP's. A few bottles into the meal the American VP and the French VP got into a contest over which country made the best wine, buying bottle after bottle of different varietals and regions, with the rest of the table as the judging panel, and I think $1000 on the table for the winner. The resulting tab was well into the 5-figure range, and only because at some point the american VP played a joke on the frenchman by showcasing a "great american wine" that was actually some really cheap, bad french rubbish, at which point the competition turned into a "worst wine" competitition on a $100 wager, which was much cheaper. Fortunately VP's have bigger expense accounts than us hoi-polloi so nobody was fired.

Unfortunately for me, I discovered that I liked *good* red wine, which is as expensive as good scotch but disappears a lot quicker...

I probably could have bought a bottle of 25 for what the tab was, but my company will pay for the tab, but not the bottle. I think the doubles of the 25 were around $76 each.

I'm not a great fan of the scottish whiskeys, but I love the Irish (soft and round like a great cognac). And most of all the single malt called Green Spot (about $ 100).

The first bottle was given to me by my collegues at work for my birthday and the second one I earned for doing extra work for the CEO.

Now I have my own business and can't afford to buy this malt, so I have to settle with Famous Grouse as alternative. But when business go up, I will buy myself a bottle of Green Spot.

As some of you know, I've been working my ass off getting ready for my impending wedding... cleaning, putting in a new yard, cutting down trees, building a new floor, etc. We've also been bleeding money and, well, I don't deal with that real well.

I was exhausted the other night, sitting down for a rare quiet moment and Roxane told me she had a surprise for me and to close my eyes. I did, and she brought me in a tumbler with a generous 2 fingers of 18 year old MacAllan... doubly odd because all I had in the cupboard was a bottle of glennfiddich I've been sipping on every now and then. She'd been to beverages and more to buy champagne for our wedding guests and the toast, and she decided to buy me a bottle of 18 yr old Mac out of her own allowance because, in her words "You work hard, you never rest, you're 40 years old and you deserve to drink better scotch than that 12 yr old Glennfiddich". She knew I wouldn't spend the money to buy it for myself so she took it upon herself to buy it for me.

She left me on the couch, the bottle close at hand, a fishing show on TV and the dog in my lap and she went out to have dinner with her daughter (and brought me back leftovers). She didn't even tease me too much when she came back and I was tanked, horizontal on the couch snoring, and had the dog sleeping on my chest snoring also.

Now, gentlemen, THAT is my favorite singlemalt scotch.

Oh, and when we were buying my new suit she made sure to brag to the salespeople "He's old fashioned. He wears suspenders, drinks good scotch, and shaves with a straight razor... and he's marrying ME"

    Heh

Congratulations, you've found her. That woman one out of a bilion .

The more difficult it would be for me to find such a woman, with maybe 80% of these qualities. One that inderstands you and your needs without asking.

    Wow!

Again, congrats! I'm sure you'll get a happy life.

Told this one before, but it's worth repeating here:

On one of my first dates with my wife, The Validator, we were off to a house party without our own drinks so we stopped in at a local pub for a few first. I was trying to do the classy thing, looking for a table when she said, "Do you want to just sit at the bar"? So we belly up and no sooner are our arses planted on a pair of stools when she scans the bottles behind the bar and positively moans, "Ooooo, Oban". That was the first moment I thought, "This could be the one".

    Amen!!

I would have to say that Macallan 12 yr is one of my favs as well as Oban 10yr and Laphroaig Islay 10yr. I still have not tasted too many different single malts but these are 3 of my favourites. Looking at the others favs gives me a nice list of bottles to try........

Hey xman, next time we get together I will have a treat for you :P
